About the Author
Foreword
I f you are an educator, spouse, parent, pastor, or leader in the market place, you will find When Words Hurt extremely practical and thought provoking. Recently, I received a scathing email from someone close to me. It hurt! There is nothing enjoyable about opening your inbox and reading harsh criticisms. How does one respond? How does one answer a critic, particularly if there might be a kernel of truth in the criticism? Should you listen to criticism, or disregard it all together? How does one live with the reality of receiving criticism … without developing a calloused heart?
When Words Hurt answers these questions and offers strong insights for dealing with both the criticism—and the critic! Dr. Bullock’s insights are invaluable for dealing with the negative feedback. This book is an indispensable read for leaders of all fields.
Aristotle said that the only way to avoid criticism is to “say nothing, do nothing, be nothing.” The issue isn’t will you receive criticism, but how will you react to it when you do? The natural response is to get defensive, dismiss the feedback, or internalize the words of the critic, causing hurt, discouragement, and a heart filled with pain. Eventually, criticism may even paralyze, preventing leaders from effectively accomplishing their mission. Unfounded or even founded criticism has caused the miscarriage of many great dreams. By providing principles and down-to-earth skills for coping with critics and criticism, Dr. Bullock equips us with the tools necessary to “stay focused” on our tasks, not our detractors.
Dr. Bullock skillfully grounds his thoughts with a biblical foundation. His insights are not born from a “self-help” perspective but substantiated with well thought out scriptural examples and personal insights. He draws illustrations and insights from biblical characters who had to deal with criticism … including Jesus.
Dr. Bullock also writes from life experiences, sharing personal stories that exemplify the humility and strength vital for leaders to cope with criticism. His authentic and honest approach to criticism is truly refreshing. Just reading his mishaps when dealing with criticism
