Foreword

I am delighted to introduce the 8th edition of Springboard. This workbook supports the successful Springboard programme run by women for women.
Gender inequality is often in the news, as women at work are still not on an equal footing with men. Women not reaching their full potential undermines both individual and organisational success. So, despite progress, blockages still remain. Springboard, however, helps women overcome these.
I first came across Springboard in 2001 when, serving as President of the British Association for Women, I cited it as one of the most positive initiatives for women in the police. Then, when I was a senior manager in the Avon & Somerset Constabulary, Springboard enabled talented women in policing to gain the confidence, skills and insights to engage their personal and organisational resources in achieving their goals.
Whilst working for Avon & Somerset, Thames Valley and Cambridgeshire police services, I have seen the benefits of the Springboard Programme. The winning combination of face to face training provides time to reflect and decide where to go, based on your values. Women get fired up, unlocking their potential by seeing what they can achieve. Participants become more confident, resilient and focused. This is good for both for work and home life balance, with participants developing support networks for positive change.
Life is about making the most of it. Springboard invites you to become the best you can be, making your own unique contribution. May you be inspired to make the change that is right for you, and I wish you every success with Springboard and your careers.

Life is the key to everything. Remember, this isn’t a dress rehearsal we’re going through, it’s the real thing .

Are you a starter, a runner or a finisher? Beginning well will influence how much you get out of Springboard. Channelling your energy into working through the workbook means you get the best out of yourself. So begin well now!
You are faced with a golden opportunity. Whether you are tackling this workbook on your own or with other people, you have already taken the first step by opening this book and starting. You have either created, or grabbed, the opportunity!
Springboard is all about what you can do for yourself. It’s not about what your family, the government, your partner, your colleagues, your manager or your organisation or social network should do for you. You change what you want to change and be who you want to be. You decide which boundaries you want to keep, which you have to keep and which to shift or eliminate completely.
It’s about you accepting the responsibility for yourself, realising that no one hands you life on a plate, making the most of everything you’ve done so far and, looking the world in the eye, believing ‘I can do this’.
It is also an unusual opportunity,
