Insights from Chapter 1

#1

When you adopt a frugal lifestyle, start by re-evaluating your daily routines to make sure that you aren’t spending any more money than is necessary to get the job done.

#2

When it came time for me to restock my supply of a certain cleaning product, I couldn’t justify the cost when there were cheaper options available. I had to learn to switch my cleaning products to cheaper ones, or make them at home.

#3

Frugal cleaners rely on rags to clean things. Rags are simply old T-shirts and towels that would have been thrown away. Keep them handy in a convenient place and make use of them whenever possible.

#4

Microfiber cloths are another great investment for cleaning your home. They can be used for many purposes, such as cleaning computer and electronics screens, replacing Swiffer-like dusting cloths, wiping down sealed countertop surfaces, and dusting.

#5

You can save energy and money by washing clothes less often and by trying to stop relying on the dryer as much.

#6

If you have just washed clothes that you plan on hanging up to dry, try tossing those items in the dryer for ten minutes. This little bit of time will help to dewrinkle these articles of clothing and get any excess water out of them.

#7

By pulling clothes out of the dryer one by one, you end up with fewer articles in the dryer overall. And that means that the drying cycle won’t have to run as long to get everything dry.

#8

If you are able to hang your clothes outside, do so. If not, try to use a drying rack or a clothesline. Clothespins may leave indentations on your clothes, so avoid them if possible.

#9

We’ve made a big change in our cooking habits: we're cooking at home more often. This has helped us keep our spending in check, and it's healthier for everyone. Because if meals don't originate at home, they might come from a fast-food restaurant, a vending machine, or a convenience store.

#10

Meal planning is another way we’re saving money. We simply write down what we could have for dinner, and if we know we’ll have a busy afternoon, we just call the local pizza joint and call it dinner.

#11

Meal planning helps you avoid the stress of having to come up with dinner plans at the last minute, as well as helps you sit down with your family each night to enjoy a meal.

#12

Buying items only when they're on sale and when you have a coupon, is a quick win in the frugal department. You can find coupons online for offline shopping.

#13

A chest freezer is a good investment if your regular refrigerator and freezer can’t hold everything you need to store food. As long as the food is still fresh when you buy it and put it in the freezer, you can be sure that it will be edible six months down the road.

#14

If you really don't like the taste of your municipal water, consider purchasing a sink-mounted water filter or a water filtration system for your refrigerator.

#15

Start packing your own lunch every day, whether for work or for school. Invest in reusable containers that you can keep in daily rotation.

#16

Frugal people try to avoid wasting anything. This means that when you think your supplies of a certain item are almost gone, you should do everything you can to stretch that item’s usefulness for a little longer to save money.

#17

Every six months or so, we review our bills and credit card charges to identify costs we can reduce. We recently switched our landline phone provider, saving $50 a month on phone service, which adds up to $600 a year. We’re also getting back premium cable channels for free as a result.

#18

When you approach life through a frugal lens, you realize that shopping for clothes, groceries, and supplies has to change. You must change how you get those things, how frequently you buy them, and how much you spend on them.

#19

When you're living frugally, you can't just go out and buy the latest items. Instead, you have to look current by buying high-quality classics and treating your clothes well so that they last a long time.

I needed a casual blazer, so I became obsessed with finding one that was well-made and looked good on me.
