A portion of the author’s royalties will be donated to the charity.
Critical acclaim for The Sixth Form MBA and Susan Croft:
“An indispensable guide to equip every reader with an insight into the world beyond formal education. This is a must-have for every sixth form school and college library.”
Deborah Streatfield, Founder of MyBigCareer

“Equipping school leavers with skills that will help them to navigate the increasingly crowded job market is important for the future of work. Susan's new book fills a gap providing easily digested, useful advice for sixth formers about how to manage themselves in the job market and workplace. Her wide experience of the world of work and how to present yourself effectively to clients and potential employers shines through.”
Kandy Woodfield, Director of Learning, NatCen Social Research

“This long-overdue book has many useful tips and advice for any Sixth Form student either going on to University or straight into full-time employment. The essential skills Susan Croft covers will prepare any 15-18 year old for life after school in a highly-competitive market… as someone who regularly uses the skills of interns and graduates, I can highly recommend this book. My own 17 year old is now enthusiastically reading her copy!”
Allyson Stewart- Allen, CEO, International Marketing Partners; Cranfield list of 100 Women to Watch

"For most people, the social and professional skills necessary for leadership don't come readily. That is why this book is so welcome. The best leaders are those who relate well to people, who are interested in others and are comfortable in social and professional surroundings. This book offers real insights into the principles of success and valuable advice on how to carry them into practice."
Sir Malcolm Grant, Chairman NHS Commission; former Provost UCL

“I thoroughly recommend this book as a concise, yet wide ranging introduction to some of the key soft and hard skills that students will need to acquire as they enter university. Understanding the rudiments of business and the associated competencies are life skills that outside of a formal postgraduate MBA course are not usually formally taught. This book provides students with just that - a quick guide to those skills that everyone talks about, but which are often learnt by default.”
David Game MA (Oxon) MPhil (Lond) Principal of David Game College and Chairman of the David Game Group

“ T he S ixth F orm MBA is simply a career bible you can refer to th r oughout your professional journey. The knowledge you get from this book will lay a solid platform for career development. Susan has presented invaluable content of knowledge in this book and it’s really useful for any sixth former interested in the key skills for career development.”
Duminda Pelmadulla, Group Financial Accountant, Unilever UK

“In the hectic world that Sixth Formers live in, they can often find that they take their eye off the ball of personal development. Yes exams are important, getting in to uni is important but so too is preparation for the world of work. This handy guide incorporates skills Sixth Formers need for the here and now (revision techniques, team-work skills, presentation skills) with those they will need in the soon-to-come, here-faster-than-you think future (negotiation, personal branding and networking). This book is a handy resource, not just for education but for the world of work.”
Gareth Roberts, Assistant Principal and IB Co-ordinator, Hockerill Anglo-European College, Hertfordshire

"At last! Something that equips young people to deal successfully with the practicalities of life after schooling, rather than specialisms and subjects. How to get on is so much more important than how to get by. Susan has painted on a broad canvass; I wish I'd had this help when I was leaving school. Use this and, whilst there is no guarantee of success, at least you start ahead of the game."
Lord Digby Jones, Former Director-General of the CBI & Minister of State for Trade & Investment, and BBC TV's New Troubleshooter.

I ntroduction

By author Susan Croft
As the author of this book, I am very pleased you have chosen to read it and I hope you will find it a useful guide on the most important things you need to know to succeed in higher education (apart from passing exams and getting good grades – and this book can even help you do that, see Chapter 6 on memory skills) and the world of work.
You can start with any chapter you like, they are meant to be stand-alone guides, but I would suggest that you consider reading the book chronologically so that the case study is a little more meaningful.
There is little doubt that you are entering a world of strong competition, constant change and a high noise level in terms of the messages and signals you will be bombarded with. This book will help you navigate this world in terms of giving you advice on all the skills you will need to develop in order to succeed.
Before I review the chapters with you, let me introduce myself, and my fellow contributors.
I have taught career skills to thousands of sixth form students throughout the UK and USA. I am a co-founder of a company called Career Skills Plus and we run workshops, summer schools, enterprise days and sixth form inductions for schools and academies. I have written two previous books – both on business subjects – and I am delighted to have the support of my excellent contributors in bringing this book to you.
I am also a director of a company specialising in mobile learning – Skill Pill M-Learning – and we provide training refreshers and reminders to mobile devices in short, animated videos. We currently work with major businesses, and may one day bring our solutions to schools as well .
John Dalton, who wrote the chapter on memory skills, is currently Vice Principal and Head of Science at a leading independent college in London and has over 25 years' teaching experience in biology. He has taught memory and learning skills all over the UK as an independent consultant and has a particular interest in how students learn. He has been a witness for a Guinness World Records memory record and has helped many students improve their learning and memory skills. He has an extensive knowledge of how sixth forms function and has helped thousands of students enter university. John is also the director of a Medical and Life Sciences course and specialises in medical teaching. John graduated in biochemistry and is a Chartered Biologist who also takes students on ecology field trips for their A-level exams. Before becoming a senior teacher, he was managing editor of Current Opinion in Gastroenterology , one of the world's leading medical journals.
Dr Cristina Sambrook, our contributor on personal branding, is a senior consultant at Positive Presence, a London-based image consultancy. She has enjoyed a successful international career in both the private and public sectors as a consultant and project manager. Dr Sambrook has lived in several countries and worked in Romania, Israel and the UK on political campaigns, foreign investments and law.
