Foreword
We live in a world where the entrepreneurial and enterprise mindset is becoming increasingly important for individuals to achieve success on a personal and organisational level. Gone are the days when the average person can aim to go to college or university, obtain qualifications and then be guaranteed a ‘job for life’. Such a thing does not exist in our world today.
To cope with this ever-changing world of complexity and global connectedness, each one of us needs constantly to be developing our ability in terms of adding value to the context in which we operate and the work we undertake. This book addresses the important idea that in reality each one of us can be thought of as a business. In order to survive and be successful we each have a need to undertake personal marketing, sales activity in terms of our ideas and possible contributions, and to be productive in whatever form that takes. We also need to handle our finances competently and look after our own personal human resource, that is our well-being.
We are in effect suggesting that each of us needs to become more enterprising and entrepreneurial, whether we are in gainful employment in an organisation or setting our own course to develop our own business. What we do know is that to develop entrepreneurship we do not just need business knowledge and skills. We need coaching and mentoring input from those who have achieved success so that we can learn from them. Above all we need the right mindset, creativity and the ability to turn that creativity into marketable innovation in products and services. We need to become leaders and to develop our ability in areas related to both business skills and people skills. A term that has emerged recently is ‘engagement’, usually associated with ‘employee engagement’. To be successful we need to be able to engage effectively with all the people who have an interest in what we do, not just the people who carry out work for us as employees or suppliers.
Every year thousands of books are written and published around the world on how to be successful in business and life in general. Some are academic, some philosophical, some technical in terms of business issues and some are both hard to read and to put into practice. This book is different in that it builds on a sound knowledge base of the principles of personal success and then presents some key issues from the growing knowledge base of neuroscience and applied psychology. In a world where technology is advancing at what seems to be an ever-increasing rate, there is a risk that our ability to interact with other humans does not keep pace with the requirement. We live in what is increasingly becoming a global village due to our ability to travel long distances by air in a relatively short time. This means that we now interact with a much wider range of national cultures than in the past and businesses are outsourcing to parts of the world where they believe they can take advantage of lower costs whilst not jeopardising quality. If the West is to survive and prosper, we have to
