In writing this book I have been enormously influenced by and drawn insights and ideas from the books, audio and video tapes, lectures and seminars of many notable authorities in the field of personal development. I have attempted to bring together the principles and techniques which I have found to be most effective, not only in my life but in the lives of others whom I have had the privilege of influencing.
My knowledge and understanding of the development of human potential has been greatly affected by the following experts in their fields:

I trust this book, inspired by these specialists, will serve to further advance the practical application of the philosophy to which they all subscribe: ‘The seeds of future achievement are the thoughts of the present. If you will control your thoughts, you will control your destiny.’
Additionally, I am deeply grateful to the participants who have attended my personal development programmes and seminars over the years. My insight into human behaviour and motivation has been significantly enhanced by their contributions, both during the courses and in subsequent feedback.

Introduction
Over the years that I have been involved in personal development training, one question has consistently cropped up: ‘Why is it that the results of motivational talks, tapes, videos, books, courses and seminars are limited and not long lasting?’ I discovered that for motivational training to be truly effective, it was not enough to tell people what to do and how to do it. There are literally millions of people who know what to do and how to do it, but still do not go into action. The reason is that they have not re-programmed themselves for success. Naturally, they want to consistently produce positive results in their lives, yet they continue to follow their previously programmed limiting behavioural patterns. This is perfectly natural. We are creatures of habit and will tend to do tomorrow what we did yesterday and today. If we want different and more positive results, then we must behave differently and more positively than before. This requires a fundamental change in our thinking leading to changes in beliefs, attitudes, feelings and ultimately – behaviour. When the new behaviour is rewarded with the results we seek, we are far more likely to continue with it until it becomes a habit.

Most people use less than ten per cent of their true potential
Opinions vary as to the exact amount of our true potential that we actually use. However, there is general agreement that by and large most of us use no more than around ten per cent – at most. That is a pretty staggering statistic and a sad indictment of the human race. Stop and think about it for a moment. You are where you are today having used, at most, one tenth of your abilities. Just imagine what you could achieve and where you could be if you were aware of and knew how to use the other 90 per cent of untapped potential. The objective of this book is to help you recognise and use your full potential. It is practically orientated – designed to get you to DO certain things, many in fact, on a step-by-step basis. There are a number of activities provided for this purpose. Simply reading this book will not change anything in your life. If you are serious about making the most of your abilities, you will have to take action and the activities provided will enable you to practically apply the principles and techniques covered and thereby achieve meaningful results.
Francis Bacon was credited with the saying: ‘Knowledge is power’. I believe he should have added two more words to make that statement completely true: ‘Knowledge is power, when applied’. There is a multitude of people who have the knowledge and seem to delight in a lifetime pursuit of acquiring as much of it as possible. Yet they do absolutely nothing with it! This is fine for the few who have, as one of their goals, the desire to become accumulators of information. But, for the majority who sought the knowledge in the first place to put it to some use, it becomes increasingly frustrating. Think about the people you know. I’m sure you can immediately bring to mind someone who falls into this category.
Knowledge is power – when applied

I have a message for you. Don’t waste your time reading this book if you lack the commitment to follow through and apply the knowledge you are about to learn. It is not intended for passive entertainment but for your active participation. It contains no magical formulae to transform you into an overnight success. There are no ‘get rich quick’ schemes. Instead you will find proven principles and laws of success which will enable you to become the winner you wish to be – if you apply them . They cannot work for you without you.
What does personal success mean to you? To some it conjures up ideas of wealth and materialistic possessions; to others happiness and fulfillment in their lives. But to many, perhaps the majority, it is a measure of how they rate against their colleagues. This is wrong. You will never be truly successful by constantly comparing your performance with others. At best you will only become a second rate version of who and what they are. Rather, your yardstick of success should be your own potential performance. The definition of success that I prefer is: ‘Success is the progressive realisation of your genuinely desired goals.’ If you adopt this definition as your own then you will start to look upon success as a journey rather than a destination and will set your own standards of performance to measure your progress along the way.
Your goal should be progress – not perfection

The most important investment you will ever make is in your own development. The price that you have paid for this book is a mere drop in the ocean to the return that it will bring you, provided you are serious about making the most of your life and are consequently prepared to take the time and effort to do what is asked of you.
What you do with your life is your responsibility – no one else’s. Of course you can find so-called ‘reasons’ for not being successful, such as your lack of education or experience, insufficient money, your upbringing, social class, race, religion and so on. These are not reasons – they’re excuses. It is easy to blame other people, circumstances beyond your control, the government, the economy, the weath
