Warning Signs of Too Much Debt
How serious are your debt problems? Ask yourself these questions:

•      Do you have to borrow to pay your current bills?
•      Are you frequently late paying your bills?
•      Can’t avoid using credit?
•      Are your debts a source of constant friction with your mate?
•      Do your debt problems distract you from your work?
•      Do you think about your money problems a lot during the day?
The first signpost on the road to indebtedness is a lack of money and an increase in money worries.
Why Are People in Debt
Have you ever noticed that no matter how much money you seem to make, there is never enough? Do you wonder why you never seem to get ahead financially? Have you ever taken an assessment of your relationship with money? This will determine where the problem might be. Then together, we can diagnose your financial disease and develop a plan of care to treat it and cure it.
It is important to identify why you are into debt so that you can begin to make some changes.
Debt is created from many sources: a spending addiction, living a lifestyle beyond your means, being driven by wants, impulse buying and a lack of respect for your money.
Reason 1: Needs vs Wants
You incurred debt when you choose to purchase things you cannot afford, things that you want, rather than things that you need. Wants, like greed, have no limits.
What’s the difference between needs and wants?
Needs are those things that you cannot live without or that living without would cause hardship and distress. Wants are things you can live without.
The amount of money you have to spend is finite; everything in life is a trade off. If you are going to spend your money on one thing today then this becomes money that is not available for saving or for purchasing more important items in the future. Just as you prioritize your time, learn to prioritize your spending. Before you make a purchase, ask yourself whether the item is a need or a want and decide accordingly.
Reason 2: Unaffordable Lifestyle
Many people feel they deserve to “treat” themselves to expensive items or spend money they don’t have on living a lifestyle they have yet to earn. Many have the mistaken belief that their value depends on how much money they have and their status in life. I know people who spurge all their savings to beautify their house and to impress others. They are asset rich, but cash poor.
How then do you impress others without spending a bomb? If you don’t have it, fake it. Why spend $10,000 on a Rolex watch to impress others and make yourself poorer? If you really feel insecure about yourself, get yourself a fake one. If diamond is your best friend, get a fake one. Only a gemologist can tell the difference. Why wear a genuine one and risk getting robbed?
“ Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like ” ~ Will Smith
Reason 3: Impulsive Buying
The favorite activity of most money-spenders is shopping. Shopping can become a compulsive behavior. It is an unhealthy therapy for stress. A compulsive spender spends money whether he needs to or not. He does not stop to think whether he can afford something, if he wants it, for whatever reason, he gets it.
Never buy what you do not need just because it is cheap. If you buy things you don’t need, you could end up selling the things you need.
Reason 4: Lack of Respect for Money
One reason why people end up in debt is that they were never taught basic financial management, such as paying bills on time.
If you have children, it is your responsibility to teach them to value money. Do not leave the responsibility to the teachers or the government. Start them young with a piggy bank. When they are old enough, help them open a saving account.
