About the Reviewer
Henry Bol AI expert with domain knowledge in E-commerce and Online Marketing.
I feel very fortunate to have been active in Internet Business since the early days (1997): pioneering, learning by doing. In 2007, I started as an independent ecommerce expert: both as an ad interim professional to improve online marketing & sales or as a project manager for supervising internet projects. I am grateful of having had the opportunity to work at quite a few different and renowned companies.
Another important step is in 2017 (these seem to be every 10 years): seeing the big impact and magic of Artificial Intelligence, I started intensively studying AI. I covered the full range: from modelling to business models, from coding to ethics.
AI is bringing new dimensions to business and technology. Bridging those worlds is the challenge.

What Some Students Have To Say
“I took up this course just because of my personal interest but now I feel that it has helped me explore new options and opportunities. I feel that it is a really good, helpful and interesting course for people who are curious to increase their knowledge of AI.”
“This is a very useful AI course. Unlike several AI courses out there that are tech-heavy or more about coding, this course helps managers and leaders understand AI in an easier way. By the end of this course, I felt more confident about my knowledge of AI, how to understand or use it and how to successfully implement it in my company.”
“Very informative and example based learning. The quizzes and examples help you retain useful information.”
“An awesome course explaining complex concepts of AI in simple terms. Really helpful for any management students who want to get a good understanding of AI in the business world.”
Acknowledgement
First and foremost, I would like to thank my parents, who had allowed a younger me to temporarily put aside my career as a trained engineer and marketer to pursue one as an author. This book, like others that came before it, is a result of that authorial first step that few parents would risk. I can’t thank you enough.
A ‘Thank You’ must also go out to my wife, Pooja, for supporting every project I undertake, especially since they invariably demand the time that would otherwise be reserved for her.
I would also like to thank the team at BPB Publications, my publisher, for driving this book with inspiring process detail and receptivity, from an obscure Word document to your hands. And Henry Bol, whose feedback has lent this cake, its icing. It’s been a pleasure.
Developing a thorough understanding in a field as little understood as AI requires a climate that can nurture knowledge-sharing and experience-gaining. For that, credit goes to my colleagues, our clients, and my instructors who have revealed the different facets and sensitivities of AI journeys along the way.
And of course, no task is ever accomplished without His/Her grace, whether we consider it bestowed upon us by an omnipresent entity or an elevated fragment of ourselves.
Thank you, Sai Baba.
Preface
Welcome to this journey on how to use and manage Artificial Intelligence.
Let’s start with a story. Back in the 90s, I remember the day my family brought our first personal computer home. Everyone in the family looked at it with amazement. There weren’t many users back then. People had only heard about it and were casually intrigued by it. But none of us knew that in a few years, each one of us would start using these computers and that it would become a core skill to know to avoid being left behind. Today this skill comes to us naturally.
Why am I sharing this with you? Because unlike computers back then, AI today is already a part of our everyday life, whether we realize it or not. It has become advanced enough to allow the creation of an entirely new organism (from frog stem cells) called Xenobots – tiny living machines that can move independently and even self-heal! And yet, organizations are struggling to find managers who can understand and get results out of even simple AI solutions at work. What does that tell us about the prevalent skill gap in AI management? And how important a role can AI plays in your life and career over the years?
There is a good reason for this growing importance of AI. As you will see through this course, artificial intelligence is solving problems that we just cannot solve without it: Problems that arise because of our reduced ability to focus, our need to analyze a lot of information quickly and cheaply, the rising costs and even a lack of time in our busy lives. Whether we think AI is dangerous or a gift, we have to understand it properly first. And that brings us to the problem at hand.
While we are trying to train more data scientists and engineers to create good AI solutions, there is a growing lack of users, managers, and leaders who know how to apply AI in their work or to business/organizational problems in the right manner. Most AI initiatives fail today not because of lack of good solutions but because of one or more of the following issues on the management side: Lack of understanding of what AI is and why/when it can be powerful Unrealistic expectations of what AI can do Absence of a proper business strategy in place around AI Wrong choice of the type of AI technique for a business problem Uninformed choice of a weak/superficial AI solution Lack of readiness in terms of data Lack of employee and/or leadership support
The growth and success of AI depend on the support and investment it receives from informed current and future organizational leaders and managers. After all, they are the sponsors, decision-makers, and end-users of AI.
To ensure its responsible and successful use and adoption, it is of utmost importance that we understand AI just as well as we understand and use applications like Microsoft Office today. This book is aimed to fill this growing skill gap in organizations. In doing so, it can provide an added competitive advantage for both short and long-term growth by teaching skills that recruiters are struggling to find in their existing workforce.
So, kudos to you for having taken on this challenge of grasping AI on a practical level. It’s a technical subject, but the challenge is not as big as it may seem. Just the way you do not need to learn coding to work on a computer, you also don’t have to learn to code to understand and use AI. With that in mind, this book has been structured to follow a typical AI journey you will likely face or lead.
We will start with an overview of what AI is and how you can become AI-ready. We will then visit the AI laboratory to observe the data scientists in action and understand how AI does all the different things it does. That will prepare us for the final step in our journey where, having learned which AI solution to choose for a problem and how to prepare for it, we will learn how to deploy it and get it accepted by others.
