Every leader in the social sector starts out believing they can change the world. But they often find that making a clear, measurable difference isn't easy. Few, by mid-career, are achieving quite as much impact as they anticipated. Some leaders settle for that and focus on having a decent career. Others don't sit back. Instead, they look to take their effectiveness as a social sector leader to another level. This book shares the experience of more than 25 exceptional leaders running successful charities, social enterprises and public service mutuals. Introducing Social Club

Social Club is a unique place for a new generation of social sector leaders to come together, share, learn and have a voice. This book is one expression of that voice, with many of our profiled leaders here also members of the Club.
Social Club starts with the understanding that successful social change now and in the future relies on great leadership. This means helping today s social leaders to identify and fulfil their true potential. It also means helping people in very tough jobs to succeed in the rest of their lives, too.
To join Social Club, therefore, is a commitment not only to your professional development as a leader, but also to your own personal development. For, to be fit for the long-haul, you need to know yourself, be in balance and maintain a level of emotional control, even when all hell is breaking loose. At Social Club, we don t pretend leadership is easy. Indeed, we start from the premise that it s very easy to get it wrong: for your organisation as well as yourself.
Social Club membership offers the opportunity to meet with fellow leaders up to 10 times a year at our networking events held around the country. At these events, you hear from distinctive speakers from a variety of worlds, often beyond the social sector.
The Club is a place to grow, so we offer on top, bespoke one-to-one coaching, breakthrough events for senior teams, a peer-led advisory service and a range of smaller themed events throughout the year, where you can find solutions to the biggest issues facing you and your organisation.
Social Club is also about having a voice as a leader. We help leaders develop their voice individually and as a group through our social media channels, podcasts and publications. We help you as a social sector leader carry your influence further and faster both inside and beyond the organisation.
There are no formal entry bars to Social Club. Your organisation can be large or small, a charity, a CIC or private. Informally, we look for thoughtful leaders who want to get better, want to share and have more of a voice. If this is you, then get in touch and we can talk.

About the Author
Foreword by Norman Lamb MP

Changing the world isn t easy, whether you are a politician, as I am, or running a charity or social business.
Which is why this book is so welcome.
All of the social leaders featured here offer precious pointers to others who have dedicated their careers to making a direct difference in the world.
What I like about Craig s book is that nobody is pretending they have all the answers. Successfully changing the world is about more than running an organisation really well. It is also about building the right alliances, making compromises and accepting that change is a long-game, sometimes a lifetime s work.
Rather like in politics.
My own interest in social change has been informed by my own family s direct experiences: our oldest son, diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder at the age of 16 and my oldest sister who took her own life.
We have witnessed too many failures of the system. This has informed my own as a politician and a campaigner for better mental health services for all.
The very best social change organisations do not only show a better way to help people but they also influence the way a problem is perceived. Many of the organisations featured here do both. For that reason alone, this is a book that everyone should read.
If you lead in the social sector, or hold any ambition to do so, there is no better preparation than this excellent book.
It is very important to know who you are. To make decisions. To show who you are.

Author s Note
Writing a book is a labour of love. Everything else goes to one side, including the day job and family life, as you sit wondering how you re ever going to get it all done.
This book feels very special to me. I ve learned a great deal while writing it. I ve completed it feeling more committed than ever to leaders like you who choose to devote their career to changing the world.
I owe thanks to far too many people to name individually here. Particular thanks go to Robert Ashton, my publisher at Turnpike Press, who also conducted and drafted several of the interviews.
Thanks also to my colleague Jo Probitts at Stepping Out, to my long-term editor, Mark Griffiths, and to my coach Iain Hasdell for their personal support.
And, of course, to my partner, Katy, and our three kids, Ruby, Wilf and Arthur, who witness all my ups and downs.
I also want to thank all the contributing leaders who gave us such strong material for the book, not all of whom we have been able to include. I hope I have done this justice. Your generosity on all levels has made everything here possible.
Introduction

Everyone I have met who is a leader in the social sector starts out believing they can change the world. But they often find that making a clear, measurable difference isn t easy. Few, by mid-career, are achieving quite as much impact as they anticipated. Some leaders settle for that and focus on having a decent career.
Others don t sit back. Instead, they look to take their effectiveness as a social sector leader to another level. But where to go for help? One sees lots of Secrets of Success books by business gurus and entrepreneurs about being a business success. Very little exists for the social sector that explores what makes for greater success. And vanishingly little brings the wisdom of our top social sector leaders to the fore. Hence this book, now.
Before I wrote this book, I asked myself some big questions :
Why this book - and why now?
One reason is personal. I bowed out of front-line leadership before I was 40. I spent 14 years as CEO of a social sector organisation I founded when I was 25. I left exhausted, frustrated and feeling psychologically incapable of doing a similar job again.
My life had changed. Kids had arrived, money was suddenly tighter. I felt pressure on all sides. While a highly successful young leader by any conventional measures, it didn t actually feel that way inside. I was burnt out and left my CEO job not fully convinced I had done enough to justify the MBE I was offered.
So I forged a different life - helping current and future leaders across all sectors not only on how to make a bigger difference at the sharp end, but also to last the course, enjoy themselves and have a better balance.
The other reason I sat down to write this book is that after many conversations with many different social leaders, I believe I now have some powerful things to say about how leaders can really change the world for the better into the 2020s.
I have been helped massively in this by the people documented in this book. This has enabled a resource for leaders like you on how to be more successful. Not just in terms of visible achievement, but also inner success: how to remain strong, happy and balanced while also making a bigger impact in the world.
Who is this book for?
This is a book for social sector leaders, current and future. You might run a charity, a Commu
