About the Author
Introduction

After writing any book, it is my usual practice that my wife must read it first, and offer her suggestions before I make a decision whether to publish or not. I honestly respect her opinions because they are valuable to me.

When I finished writing BE AN ICON, I asked her to read it. She was so excited as she read the first chapter, but while reading the second, I noticed that she was frowning. When I asked why, she said, I don’t like the second chapter because it is too abstract. The moment she said that, I knew that I had to restart the whole book because the structure and nature of the second chapter was that of the rest of the book.

For a few months, I began to think on how to redo the book, until one day, the idea hit me. So, what you’re about to read is as a result of the thinking of a woman with a wise heart and mind.

BE AN ICON is a motivational, leadership, strategy, and personal development book. It contains diverse topics, but all directed towards a common result; success. The book is packed with principles that are applicable to every facet of life. It isn’t a book for one-time read; it is a book that can be daily looked into, so as to daily succeed.

BE AN ICON wasn’t written to just give you a momentary motivation; it teaches you how to. If you know how to, you will understand the various steps to take in order to excel in your pursuits. The how to, is the difference between the first draft of this book and the final one. The first mainly motivated but didn’t tell you what to do, but the second proferred solutions.

As you take the time to read this book, pay close attention to the principles, strategies, suggestions and opinions; as this, will guide you and direct you to more purposeful paths that will bring that change and difference you’ve desired.

BE AN ICON will either change your thinking or boost it if you’re already in the right direction. It will serve as a catalyst that will help speed up your reaction for positive change.

As you read, get a copy for someone. As you read, read with an open mind because an open mind is a creative mind.

Thank you.

CHAPTER ONE

Who Is An Icon?

I was raised in a humble background; clouded by the chains of poverty and lack. Everything around me told me that there was no future because it all appeared like we were doomed to always be at the bottom of life. But, in the house was a believer; a woman who, in spite of lack of education and exposure saw the tomorrow that she knew was impossible for her to enter, but encouraged everyone who had age on his or her side to do so. This woman was my maternal grandmother; a unique icon emeritus!

In a stage that we couldn t afford a plate of boiled rice, my maternal grandmother, in her imagination, made you add salad and grilled chicken to the meal that was completely out of reach. As a growing child, the only future I saw was the picture painted and interpreted by my maternal grandmother; Alice. So, my impression of who an icon should be is:

A Mentor: a mentor is a careful guide and a teacher that sees a better tomorrow despite the upheavals of today. A mentor is someone who believes in the possibilities of the mentee breaking through the obstacles and chains of yesterday and today, and so, encourages the mentee to push on, until the baby of the dream and vision is born.

Everyone who succeeded, one way or the other, had someone who stood formally or informally, as a mentor. Every mentor who has a genuine interest in the success of the mentee is an icon. An icon does not have to be popular; he may just be someone in a hinterland, unknown to the world, but preparing the destiny and purpose of those that will be world changers. Are you an icon?

A Picture: a picture may be a painting or photograph. Whenever we encounter challenges, pictures always pop up in our minds. The picture you see may be the solution you need to overcome the obstacles you meet. Sometimes, the picture that appears in your mind when certain obduracy confronts you is that of an icon. The icon may be a book that you ve read that deals with such challenge or a quote from someone you have met one way or the other. The crux of the matter is that a picture is an icon. So, when you face a circumstance or when a circumstance faces you, which picture do you see? The picture you see will either save or enslave you. On the other hand, when people encounter dangers in life, business or career, what kind of picture do they perceive you to be; a saviour or enslaver? A picture is an icon. Are you an icon?

An Image: an image is similar to a picture; the only difference is that some images are statues; therefore, they are in solid forms. Some people can t paint pictures, but they can mould statues. Well, I would rather say that unprofessionally speaking, everyone can at least paint or mould something even if it may look ugly and a complete contrast to what it should actually be. For the fact everyone can paint or mould; though it may appear shapeless, means that everyone has the capability of being an icon. An icon is an image; an image is a brand. As an icon, you are a brand. You are a far bigger brand than Coca-Cola. You are a much bigger brand than Apple. You are a far greater brand than all the products and services on earth combined. You are an image; a top class image. Treat yourself like a top brand because that is who you are!

A Representation: a representation is an expression or designation that stands on others behalf. A representation is also a description or statement of things that are true or alleged. An icon is a representation. As an icon, you stand for excellence and success. As an icon, you stand for courage and victory. When you see who you are, you will live who you are. As a representation, you may sometimes take the knock, but that is part of your assignment. Before writing this chapter, I copy edited a client s PH.D thesis on industrial relations. On it, I read a lot about union and non-unionised forms of employee representations. Those who represent employees in management/employee negotiations sometimes get battered by management for being reprobate. The reps don t surrender because of fear of intimidation or victimisation; they know that it is part of their jobs. Therefore, as someone who represents dreams and visions, don t hang up because of the battering. Remember, it is part of the assignment. You re an icon; you re a representation of excellence. Maintain your position; maintain your status.

A Symbol: some companies don t talk too much; their symbols speak for them. When I see the Nike symbol, I simply recite their slogan; Just do it! Whenever I see a network of rings of different colours; I remember the Olympics. Anytime I see the symbol of a grey apple with a small part of its side bitten off, I know it is the mega company, Apple; the owner of all the I s; iPod, iPhone, iPad, and whatever.

A symbol is the voice of a brand. You are a symbol, don t lose your voice. A symbol is the picture, image and representation of a brand. You are a picture, image and representation of a massive brand; be visible; be notable. As a symbol, you are an identity; don t hide it. As a symbol, you are a mind changing slogan; shout the slogan; make it loud. You ve always been an icon even if you thought you weren t. Continue to be; you are an icon!

A Sign: a sign is a footprint that shows that you were there. When you leave this world, you may go with your symbol, but your sign will always remain if you actually made a difference. Symbols may go, but signs persist. Mohammed Ali does not have a symbol, but we see his signs everywhere. Nelson Mandela does not have a symbol, but his signs will live forever. Martin Luther King Junior does not have a symbol, but his signs still form the basis for human freedom. Are you a sign, or are you just a symbol? A true icon must have a sign. What is your sign?

A Figure: a figure, apart from its description as shape is a number. As an icon, you are a number. As an icon, you re not just an ordinary number; you are number one. As number one, you are the principal and head. A principal and head is an outstanding icon. Sincerely speaking, you are outstanding. Except you believe that you are, you may live the life of aren t. Living like you aren t disfigures the whole essence of your unique genetics. As a trained Biochemist, I can confidently tell you that you re a un
