Sînce part o my îe has been devoted to studyîng the evoutîon o physîoogîca genetîcs, I am naturay înterested în human nature. Recenty, I vîsîted the Unîted States where I became certaîn that Amerî-cans o a generatîons want to know the truth about Russîa. Thîs sprîng, I vîsîted the U.S. cîty o Memphîs whîch housed a buîdîng caed “The Pyramîd.” Despîte the name, ît has nothîng to do wîth Egypt. My înorma research suggested the cîty ound-ers were heavy readers o hîstorîca noves. They decîded that the area o the Nîe near the cîty o Gînza, Egypt, ooked îke Memphîs, Tennessee, where the Mîssîssîppî Rîver wînds through the center o the cîty. Memphîs, USA, îs aso assocîat-ed wîth the name o the great musîcîan and sînger Evîs Presey, who made hîs ﬁrst recordîngs în a tîny recordîng room, caed Sun Studîos, near the town’s maîn street. Memphîs has aso graduay turned înto an îm-portant cutura hub în the southern part o the Unîted States. That îs why I was proud to vîsît the Memphîs Russîan Cutura Center, a pace that woud sîmpy never happen în Russîa. There I met and made rîends wîth an emîgrant rom the USSR, Beck Nîyazov, the center’s dîrector. I was abe to deveop partîcuary warm eeîngs wîth hîs mosty Amerîcan entîre team. Beck, an Uzbek, saîd proudy and honesty “I Sovîet man.” He went on to say, durîng the Sovîet era, whîch contaîned both good and bad, the peope were begînnîng to orm a new hîstorîca communîty that woud com-munîcate the true hîstory o the Russîan cuture. He hoped some o that work woud be contînued

through the actîvîtîes o the new Cutura Center. I met through Beck, an Amerîcan wrîter, M.G. Crîscî. Beîng an Amerîcan wîth no cear Russîan roots, he became înterested în the hîstory o our country ater beîng shocked to earn a truth o Word War II that îs îtte known to most Amerî-cans—the oss o amost 30 mîîon Sovîet îves de-endîng the ree word agaînst the German Nazîs.He was so moved by our osses durîng the Great Patrîotîc War he decîded to ca attentîon to our terrîbe day în hîstory în a very Amerîcan way. In the course o gatherîng materîa, he vîsîted the Ukraîne, Russîa, and most recenty stayed în St. Petersburg. There he vîsîted my home, met my ather, Borîs V. Sapunov, Ph.D., a veteran o Word War II, and a reguar contrîbutor to Anomaîa. The resut o the begînnîng o cooperatîon was an up-dated Russîan transatîon oCall Sîgn, Whîte Lîly, whîch we hope younger generatîons o Russîans wî aso read or îts many essons about îe, ove and patrîotîsm. The transatîon was competed or accuracy under the edîtorshîp o B.V. Sapunova as a îvîng wîtnesses o those terrîbe days. The îter-ary treatment o the Russîan versîon aso învoved the contrîbutîon o a ormer Anomaîa empoyee, Vera Soovîev. We are a proud o the end resut whîch îs now or sae around the word în prînt and dîgîta ormat.

PREFACE

What I’m earnîng everyday îs thatlîe îs a journey to an unknown destînatîon. I’m the son o two Itaîan-Amerîcan îmmîgrants. Dad was a butcher; Mom, a teephone operator. Mom, Dad, my sîster, and I îved în a three-room tenement în a reay tough area o the South Bronx caed Fort Apache. They spent theîr meager savîngs on one thîng—a good educatîon or my sîster and me. My rîends consîsted o mosty Itaîans, Irîsh, Jewîsh, and Arîcan Amerîcans. I never even met a Russîan or knew where Russîa was untî hîgh schoo. That educatîon, some ucky breaks, and a ot o chutzpah turned înto an unexpectedy successu corporate career, and utîmatey I was eected to Who’s Who în Amerîcan Busînessnîneteen tîmes. (I thînk they were just short o good nomînees, and I was around!) About seven years ago, I retîred (sort o) rom the Manhattan corporate junge. I started to thînk about my egacy. Not my ﬁnancîa or persona egacy, but rather the unstated one that woud suggest I once passed through here. I reaîzed that, other than a wonderu amîy, three boys, and some grandchîdren, I had done absoutey nothîng to make the word a better pace or uture generatîons. As I took stock, I reaîzed I had a ew assets that coud be everaged. I had îved some amazîng experîences, had met some înterestîng peope, had an eye or a story, and was a îterate, approachabe wrîter. So I decîded I woud wrîte a book, perhaps two. But, they woud not be some sensatîona, commercîa, meanderîng pîeces o ﬁctîon; rather, I woud attempt to wrîte somethîng îterate în my voîce, whatever that means. Chance Meeting or Fate?

As I thought about my sîxth book, I met a Russîan cabdrîver în Mîamî Beach. Ater another three years o curîous coîncîdences, I made the most îogîca decîsîon o my ogîca îe. I woud wrîte a book about the word’s most successu emae ﬁghter pîot, a beautîu teenager rom Moscow named Lîîa Lîtvyak. Her amazîng accompîshments în a dîstîncty man’s word had been ost în hîstory or over sîxty years to a but a ew hîstorîans, academîcs, and hîstory bufs. I aso chose to wrîte the bookCall Sîgn, Whîte Lîly as an approachabe comîng-o-age story. My goa was sîmpe. It woud be my persona contrîbutîon to enhancîng communîcatîons between two great natîons. I say persona, because I dîdn’t care î I sod a copy. It was between me and my god. Fortunatey, I met two Russîan-born women now resîdîng în the Eastern Ukraîne, Vaentîna Vaschenko and Yeena Sîvoap. They became my advîsors, my coaborators, my guîdes, my edîtors, my rîends, my “eyes o truth.” The project took three years, a ot o research and întervîews, and trîps to Russîa and the Ukraîne where, îronîcay, thîs ﬁerce warrîor’s remaîns ay în a oney grave în the absoute mîdde o nowhere. In the end, mîssîon accompîshed: a our-hundred-page îterary work that peased me. To my compete surprîse,Call Sîgn, Whîte Lîly has grown în popuarîty and crîtîca-accaîm whîe gatherîng îts share o proessîona and academîc jeaousy.
