S OME PEOPLE THINK the Cub curse goes back to the 1908 season when the Cubs won the World Series. The top National League team played the top American League team in the World Series.
In the National League the Chicago Cubs and The New York Giants competed for the top spot. Late in the season the Cubs and Giants met in New York. The game was scoreless going into the last of the 9 th . The first 2 Giants made out. The third Giant singled. The 4 th Giant singled. (FRED MERKLE - a 19 year old ball player.) The fifth Giant singled at the runner on third base scored the winning run.
The stands emptied as the fans ran to congratulate the Giants on the victory. Fred Merkle was half way between 1 st and 2 nd base. He saw the fans coming and ran into the club home to escape them without touching 2 nd base. The Cubs saw this and called for the ball. They touched 2 nd base for the 3 rd out. The run didn’t count and the game ended in a scoreless tie. The umpires called the game a tie because the field was full of the fans. The tie game would be played at the end of the season if needed.
At the end of the season the Cubs and Giants each had identical records making the tie game to be played. The Cubs won this game 4 to 2 and went to the World Series instead of the Giants. The baseball gods were angry at the Cubs for cheating the Giants from going to the World Series. They said that for cheating the Giants from going to the World Series the Cubs would not win another World Series. They were in 7 World Series and lost all 7. In 1910 the Philadelphia Athletics beat the Cubs winning 4 game to the Cubs 2. In 1918 it was The Boston Red Sox over the Cubs 4 game to 2 games. In 1929 the Philadelphia Athletics won 4 games to the Cubs 1. In 1932 The New York Yankees won all 4 games, 1935 had the Detroit Tigers winning 4 games while losing 2. In 1938 The Yankees took the first 4 games. In 1945 it was the Detroit Tigers over the Cubs 4 games to 3 games.
HISTORY ON THE OWNER OF THE BILLY GOAT TAVERN
V ASILIOS (WILLIAM) SIANIS was born on August ninth in 1894 in Tripoli, Greece. He came to the U.S. in 1914 and became a citizen of the U.S. in 1924. In 1934 he bought the Lincoln tavern that was located by the Chicago Stadium (exact location is unknown) for $205.00.
One day a goat came wandering into the tavern. William was a creative person and renamed the tavern the Billy Goat Tavern. He adopted the goat and named the goat “Murphy” and used the goat to advertise the tavern.
