Description

My Seventy Years of Spurs is veteran sportswriter Norman Giller's unique story of Tottenham Hotspur over the seven decades he has followed the Lilywhites. Norman saw the legendary 'push and run' side lift the league title in 1950/51, then as a press-box reporter he chronicled Tottenham's historic league and FA Cup double in 1960/61. He has been an eyewitness to all their triumphs and tribulations right up to the surreal 2020/21 season. Join him on a trip down White Hart memory lane in the company of each of the 21 managers who have been in charge during his 70 years as a supporter and reporter - from Arthur Rowe in the 1950s to the current master of the new Lane, Jose Mourinho. The book is introduced by Steve Perryman, captain of back-to-back FA Cup-winning Tottenham teams, who holds the club appearances record. My Seventy Years of Spurs provides an intimate and informative insight into the club from a renowned sportswriter who truly knows his Spurs.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I THANK Steve Perryman for his fee-free introduction, and pledge that a share of any profits will go to the Tottenham Tribute Trust who quietly help many of our old heroes. Thanks, too, to omniscient Tottenham disciple David Guthrie for his fact-checking, to number-one son, Michael, for his in-depth knowledge, and to Spurs Odyssey webmaster Paul H. Smith and BackPass editor Mike Berry for their support. Bowing the knee, relatively speaking, to brother and sister Paul and Jane Camillin of Pitch Publishing for their positive and productive work in surreal times, Duncan Olner for making me suitably jacketed; also thanks to diligent editor Gareth Davis, proofreader Nigel Matheson, and layout artist Graham Hales.
I could not have been so accurate with my reminiscences without the statistical facts and figures over the decades from Tottenham loyalists Les Yates, Andy Porter and John Fennelly, plus the extraordinary My Football Facts website pioneered by Paul Yarden. Thanks also for the encouragement from Voice of Spurs, Paul Coyte and my friends Mike Leigh and Theo Delaney at The Spurs Show.
I have repeated many of the stats and facts from a previous book of mine, The Managing Game , and for that diligent research I am again indebted to that fount of all Spurs knowledge, David Guthrie.
Across the years I have been furnished with photographs for my private collection by late, great Fleet Street cameramen Monte Fresco, Norman Speedy Quicke and Bob Stiggins, combined with the up-to-date pictures from the exceptional agencies, Getty Images, Colorsport and Alamy.
Both the publishers and I acknowledge that this book, My 70 Years of Spurs , does not have official recognition from Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. The views expressed are entirely those of the author, and I accept that all historic facts about Spurs are the intellectual property of the club. Thank you, Spurs, for allowing me to share my memories. It s been a long and winding White Hart memory Lane. COYS!
INTRODUCTION STEVE PERRYMAN MBE
Captained Tottenham in back-to-back FA Cup Final triumphs and played a club record 854 games for Spurs

I HAVE known Norman Giller for more than 50 years, and clearly remember the first time we were introduced by legendary manager Bill Nicholson. It was at the then Tottenham training ground at Cheshunt, and Norman was there in his role as chief football reporter for the Daily Express. I was 17 and about to play my first game for the Spurs first-team, and Bill said to Norman, I d like you to meet Steve Perryman, a diamond of a prospect.
Bill famously never threw around compliments, and he later told Norman that he had said it to boost my confidence, knowing he was throwing me in at the deep end. It certainly worked because I felt like a giant when I made my debut, little realising I would go on to play a club record 854 games in the famous Lilywhite shirt.
Norman was there for many of my games, sitting in the press box and reporting on what were golden years, including the winning of two back-to-back FA Cup Finals at Wembley - both after replays. I had to work hard for my winners medals!
When I want to know the history of Spurs, Norman is the man I turn to. He is a walking record book on the club s past, and no wonder. He first saw Tottenham play in the Push and Run championship season of 1950/51, the little matter of 70 years ago! He started reporting on them professionally in 1958, the year that Bill Nick became manager, kicking off with that famous 10-4 victory over Everton. Throughout Bill s 16 years as Spurs boss, Norman was closer to him than most and got many great interviews, several of which are featured in this revealing book.
Norman was even closer to the one and only Jimmy Greaves, and together they have produced 20 books. Jim would undoubtedly have been providing this introduction but for the savage stroke that hit him in 2015, shortly after Norman and I had helped him celebrate his 75th birthday at a dinner organised by our mutual mate, Terry Baker.
I was very happy to deputise for Greavsie, particularly when Norman told me that he will be sharing any profits from this book with the Tottenham Tribute Trust that quietly helps those old Tottenham pros who missed the gravy train of the Premier League days. The Trust pays medical and care bills without song or dance. It just gets the job done.
Virtually every manager since the 1950s has been interviewed by Norman, and he uses this inside information to make this fascinating book authoritative, informative and entertaining. Seventy years of watching Spurs. Wow! Enjoy.
KICK-OFF
by Norman Giller
THE YEARS between the following two photographs have been filled with me watching the rollercoaster fortunes of a Tottenham Hotspur Football Club that have demanded a faith, loyalty and love - yes, love - that you would not find outside the strongest of marriages.
I am not a boastful type (he boasted), but I know I am the only person walking this earth who could write this book. For a start you need to be firstly, 80-plus (check), secondly, to have watched the Push and Run side that was the first Tottenham championship team (check), thirdly, reported from the original White Hart Lane press box and the new stately, state-of-the-art media centre (check).
I have supported Spurs since the 1950/51 Push and Run season and have reported from the press box on their trials, tribulations and triumphs since 1958, the year that Sir Bill Nicholson took the reins as manager. We became good friends, as have many of the main characters in the following pages, so hopefully the book carries an authority that will crush those critics who would claim I am not a true supporter.
The fact is I have never put my hand in my pocket to watch Spurs play, so that - many will consider - disqualifies me from calling myself a Lilywhite supporter. But I like to think I have made up for it by continually making donations to the Tottenham Tribute Trust from the proceeds of my Tottenham-themed books. The Trust, quietly without fuss or fanfare, helps our old heroes who are now paying the often-painful price of all the efforts they made on the pitch to entertain and excite us. I will be sharing any profits from these memoirs with the Trust, so my conscience is clear about calling myself a Spurs supporter.

Throughout my Fleet Street reporting years I had to hide my unswerving support for Spurs because in a press box you have to at least give the impression of being neutral. Now, as I enjoy the last of the summer wine, I can come out of the closet and for several years I have had a home and a voice on the highly respected Spurs Odyssey website, run by Tottenham disciple Paul H. Smith.
So that I do not wander, I have disciplined myself to sharing my 70 years of Tottenham memories through the processional order of the managers who have been holding the reins, starting from the original one of our own , Edmonton-born Arthur Rowe, back in the 1950s. I am retelling many of the tales I have told previously, and my regular readers (okay, reader) of my 114 books to date might feel they are reading familiar passages. There is no way I can rewrite history.
I come right up to date with a chronicle of the surreal 2020/21 season that just happened to be the 120th anniversary of Tottenham s 1901 FA Cup triumph, the centenary of the 1921 FA Cup win, the platinum celebration of the 1951 Push and Run title, the diamond jubilee of the 1961 Double year, the ruby anniversary of Ricky s Goal of the Century in the 1981 FA Cup Final, and, of course, the pearl anniversary of the last time Spurs won the FA Cup in 1991.

It s been quite a journey and I invite
