Description

Celebrating a Century of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe charts the history of Europe's - and arguably the world's - greatest horse race. Established in 1920 and staged in Paris on the Bois de Boulogne, the Arc is a truly international contest attracting runners from England, Ireland, Japan, Italy, Germany and the USA. This illustrated race-by-race account traces the exploits of many all-time racing legends. From Ribot, Sea Bird, Allez France and Mill Reef, to Dancing Brave, Sea The Stars, Treve and Enable. It's also a who's who of the turf starring the Rothschild, Aga Khan, Wildenstein, Wertheimer and Head families, as well as Marcel Boussac, Vincent O'Brien, Lester Piggott and Yves Saint-Martin. The modern era features luminaries such as Andre Fabre, Coolmore, Godolphin, John Gosden, Frankie Dettori and Khalid Abdullah. You'll discover which champion hurdler won the title, which horse came back from stud to recapture his crown and which jockey ended up in prison as a result of his win.

Foreword
In 1970, as a young boy in England, I crossed the road to my best friend s house in order to watch the BBC s coverage of the Arc - and Nijinsky was going to win.
In those days, satellite links were fragile and could break down at any time. Even in bright sunlight the grainy black and white pictures often gave the impression of thick fog or heavy snow.
What I saw was unbelievable. Lester Piggott was a genius, Nijinsky was unbeatable, but Nijinsky didn t win. He emerged from the fog to come to take the lead. But instead of sprinting away, he was repassed by Sassafras, who won by a head.
I now know that there were very good reasons why Nijinsky didn t win - impatient readers should skip to the 1970 essay now - but at the time I couldn t understand what I d just seen.
A year later the next English superstar, Mill Reef, did win and so within 12 months I d experienced the extremes the Arc had to offer. But, more importantly, in those races I d been introduced to Yves Saint-Martin and Freddy Head, who were now on my list of favourite jockeys.
It didn t take long for me to become a confirmed Francophile and for the Prix de l Arc de Triomphe to become my favourite race.
Since then I ve been lucky enough to have a series of jobs where I ve been required to watch French racing on a daily basis - as the old line goes, it s a tough job but someone has to do it .
As a history geek, I couldn t help but research the subject ad infinitum and after setting out to document everything that had ever happened in French racing, it seemed more sensible to limit the scope to the greatest race.
So here it is. The history of the autumn clash of the generations that produces the champion of Europe. I hope you have an enjoyable canter through the decades and that the more recent years jog plenty of memories.
Acknowledgements
I d like to give my thanks to the following who, in their different ways, have all helped in bringing this project to fruition.
Firstly my friends and family, primarily my father to whom I owe everything. To Immy, Mandy, Steve, Paul, Joanna, Russell, and Paula, who all gave their unstinting support.
Tremendous thanks to Jane at Pitch who saw the merit of the venture, and who with her colleagues - Graham, Dean, Matt and Duncan - made it happen.
To Graham Russel - for his proof-reading pointers and Laurent Barbarin, Sky s French racing guru , for his help in finding some of the missing data. Brough Scott and Tim Cox for their encouragement and comments when the project was in its early stages.
Thanks also to Getty Images, Alamy, and the Press Association for the pictures. Finally to my current and former colleagues, Daren Cheverton, Martin Pennington, Shabaz Rafiq, Paul Newton, Richard Coghill and Ian Holding et al, for their knowledge and help over the years. And, of course, all at Brighton, Fontwell, and Plumpton racecourses.
Introduction
How the seventh French Classic came into being
This is the history of the greatest horse race in France - arguably the world. In its centenary year, what better time to celebrate the heritage of the race that has evolved to become the undisputed horse racing championship of Europe.
The Prix de l Arc de Triomphe has produced extraordinary drama, some huge shocks, and even some gut-wrenching lows, but above all - and on a regular basis - it has witnessed the exploits of truly great champions.
Before we come on to the inaugural running of the great race we need all the required ingredients to be in place. We need the sport of horse racing to exist in France, we need an organising body, we need a racecourse to run it on and, of course, a great race requires a suitably grandiose name.
A brief history of horse racing and the French-bred thoroughbred
Horse racing has existed in many different forms for hundreds of years; it even featured in the ancient Olympics. In northern Europe in the 17th century it was the Stuart kings of England who laid the foundations of the sport on Newmarket s heath, while not long after in France, Louis XIV staged racing at Versailles.
Modern racing started in earnest with the emergence of the thoroughbred at the start of
