Foreword

In the late nineties, I was invited to work as an interpreter for a football team which had signed on eleven Brazilian players. I gladly accepted the job. Football was and has been an important part of my life - a sport which has driven me to tears and which has also given me incommensurable joy. I thought it would be an easy task. However, when, I looked for literature to assist me in the interpreting, I found that there was no comprehensive, bilingual English to Portuguese and Portuguese to English football dictionary available on the market. Therefore, what I believed would be light work became a challenge. The result of that challenge is this dictionary, written and edited by myself and my wife, Rhonda.

The terms you will find in this lexicon are used on and off the field. They are also utilized by the press in their comments and analyses. This dictionary will, therefore, be very beneficial to players, technical staff, journalists, interpreters, translators, and to curious readers who simply enjoy the game.

I am certain that our Bilingual Dictionary of Football Terms English/Portuguese and Portuguese/English will serve you well: it is rich, goes straight to point, and it gives applicable examples. Moreover, it will help you to construct a solid understanding of the football culture in Brazil.

ABOUT THE TWO AUTHORS :

George Humberto Ramos was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree and Post-graduate Specialization in History, and, has been working as a Translator and Interpreter, as well as Language Instructor for the past twenty years. George has played amateur football in his country, and has worked as an Interpreter for professional football clubs. He also has wide experience in International Relations and Trade.

Rhonda Abigail Bennett Henry-Ramos has been working as a Language Training Professional and a Translator/Interpreter for over twenty years. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Latin American Studies, as well as Certification in the Teaching of English as a Foreign or Second Language (TEFL/TESL). Further, she has worked in the field of International Relations. Rhonda was also responsible for the editing of the Dictionary. She is from Trinidad and Tobago and her mother tongue is English.

Grammar Note :

In the Portuguese language, all subjects, articles and adjectives, as well as a great many nouns are gender sensitive. Masculine subjects, articles and adjectives, as well as a large number of masculine nouns end in “o,” while feminine subjects, articles, adjectives and a vast quantity of feminine nouns end in “a.” By way of an example, the sentence “He is a skillful player.” is translated as “Ele é um jogador habilidoso.” On the other hand, “She is a skillful player.” is translated as “Ela é uma jogadora habilidosa.”

For practical purposes alone, we have utilized the masculine forms in the relevant entries.
