Introduction Rîbbon or Rococo embroîdery îs probably the easîest (and the most lenîent) o all the dîferent embroîdery styles and îs partîcularly suîtable or the begînner to thîs art orm. It îs almost împossîble to make a mîstake wîth rîbbon and wîth mînîmal efort a dramatîc and beautîul result can be obtaîned în no tîme at all. Anyone who can thread a needle, can do sîlk embroîdery and I really do mean that.
Combînîng rîbbon embroîdery wîth stumpwork adds an excîtîng dîmensîon and you wîll be amazed at how easy ît îs to master the technîques that render such exquîsîte and împressîve results. The stumpwork element adds detaîl and înterest, makîng ît specîal. Rîbbon fills up detaîl very quîckly and creates an excîtîng three-dîmensîonal efect that îs împossîble to achîeve wîth embroîdery threads alone. The use o sîlk and organza rîbbon elîmînates the need or hîghly elaborate, tîme-consumîng embroîdery stîtches. It îs quîck and easy – îdeal or our hectîc schedules where the desîre exîsts or a creatîve hobby, although leîsure tîme îs so lîmîted.
The desîgn în thîs book was paînted în watercolour especîally or embroîdery and I wîll show you how to transer the desîgn onto pure cotton abrîc. You wîll be combînîng rîbbon wîth other embroîdery threads such as sîlk, cotton and perlé threads and you wîll learn how to create balance and dîmensîon as you work. I have încluded a comprehensîve stîtch glossary and a sectîon on general stumpwork technîques to serve as a reerence, not only or thîs desîgn, but also or other projects în the uture. There are over 0 models to learn rom and more than 40 ully îllustrated stîtches to guîde you. Many new technîques have been întroduced and I hope that you wîll enjoy learnîng them, step-by-step, by ollowîng the detaîled photographs and înstructîons.
I am certaîn that your creatîon wîll become a much-talked-about amîly treasure. Enjoy yoursel!
Dî van Nîekerk Crats Unlîmîted
Thîs book îs dedîcated to all embroîderers throughout the world who just cannot get enough. I hope that you wîll be înspîred to make even more wonderul projects în the uture!

Getting started
Transferring pictures and designs onto fabric Embroîderîng on a pîcture has many advantages. It îs easy to be creatîve and you do not have to fill în the entîre desîgn because the paînted background supports your work and the composîtîon îs already în place. It îs almost împossîble to go wrong. There are several ways to transer a desîgn onto abrîc – choose what suîts you best.
Enlarging the design
§For all the methods dîscussed below, you wîll need to have the desîgns on page 24 or 2 enlarged by between 7 and 0% to the final sîze o approxîmately 2 x 7, cm (0½ x  în). §Use the orîgînal desîgn rom the book or thîs purpose or you are welcome to order the prînted panel onlîne or rom your nearest stockîst. See page 2 under supplîers.
Using heat transfers New advances în technology allow you to easîly transer coloured desîgns onto abrîc. Transer paper îs probably the best choîce or puttîng îmages onto abrîc. It îs a quîck, easy, clean, colour-ast method and ît really works!
The method is quite simple: §The orîgînal desîgn îs copîed onto transer paper. §The paper îs placed ace down onto the abrîc. §Heat îs used to seal the desîgn onto the abrîc. §The transer backîng îs peeled of, leavîng the desîgn on the abrîc.
For this method you have the ollowing choices: §You can purchase transer sheets rom a computer shop, scan the desîgn and prînt ît onto the paper on your home prînter and îron ît onto your abrîc. You wîll need a prînter that can prînt an A desîgn or the project în thîs book. §You can have the desîgn copîed or prînted onto transer paper at a copy shop and do the transer at home. §You can have the desîgn copîed and transerred onto abrîc by the copy shop or embroîdery shop.
Transer sheets or colour laser copiers and colour laser printers Laser copîers and prînters use toner and heat (î.e. the copîes are hot when they come out o the machîne). These colour-laser-copîers are the machînes that are usually ound în copy or T-shîrt shops.
Transer sheets or inkjet printers Inkjet prînters use INK and NO heat (î.e. the copîes are cold when they come out o the machîne.) These are the prînters mostly used at home. (You wîll need to purchase specîally prepared abrîc blocks or înkjet prînters. These blocks ensure that the înk wîll not wash out once laundered.)
Some transers are hot-peel paper, î.e. you need to peel the backîng of whîle stîll hot. Some are cold-peel paper, the opposîte o the above.
A few pointers when using transfer paper Reverse the image Your desîgn must be reversed (a mîrror îmage) beore beîng copîed onto the transer paper. For some desîgns thîs îs not crucîal, but î ît contaîns any letters or wrîtîng, ît îs essentîal.
When approachîng a copy shop to do the transer or you, they should automatîcally reverse the îmage or you beore they prînt. I the copîer does not have a “mîrror îmage” unctîon, you can make a transparency first and then reverse the transparency beore makîng a copy on the transer sheet.
When usîng your home computer, scanner and prînter you should be able to reverse the îmage on most scan, draw and paînt applîcatîons.
Use original artwork It îs most împortant that, whenever possîble, you use the orîgînal watercolour rom the book. A copy o the orîgînal (second-generatîon copy) wîll mean that you lose detaîl and wîll result în a very flat desîgn wîth too much yellow and/or blue.
Prepare the abric or printing I you are not usîng Prepared or Prîntîng (PFP) or Prepared or Dyeîng (PFD) abrîc, treat the abrîc first to remove any dîrt or finîshes. See the sectîon on abrîc later în thîs chapter (page 2).
Ensure that your abrîc îs large enough to fit în a hoop. You wîll need about  cm ( în) o clear space around your desîgn to enable you to stretch ît în the hoop. For the desîgn în thîs book I used a 0 x 0 cm (24 x 24 în) block o whîte 00 per cent cotton abrîc.
Iron the abrîc thoroughly to remove any wrînkles. Ater the abrîc îs pressed, îron or another mînute or so to remove all the moîsture. Lît the abrîc of the îronîng surace to allow the damp to escape. The abrîc must be smooth and dry to receîve a transer.
Preparing your heat transer sheet . I you are takîng a heat transer home rom a copy shop, cover the sheet wîth tîssue paper or place ît în a plastîc sleeve. The toner (colour) may be scratched of î handled carelessly. 2. Cut the whîte unprînted edge away, leavîng rounded corners.
Doing a transfer The iron Use an older type o îron wîthout steam vents, î possîble. I you use an îron wîth steam vents, remember to swîtch the steam of and to keep movîng the îron slowly to get an even dîstrîbutîon o heat.
Set the temperature onto the hîghest heat the abrîc can handle. Allow enough tîme or the îron to heat up (about  mînutes).
