Many o us nowadays are trying to cut down on waste, particularly abrics, but may be short o ideas as to how to use those unwanted garments, bedsheets or tablecloths. In this book, we’ve come up with perhaps unexpected but practical ideas or upcycling and repurposing those items to make like-new home décor and garments that will make you all in love with your old items over again.
The beauty o working with pre-owned abrics is that you won’t get shrinkage or the risk o colour running, as these items will already have been laundered. You’ll also have a wide choice o unique abrics that you just wouldn’t be able to buy new. And, o course, you’re keeping that abric rom going to landill!
To start, take a look in your own wardrobe. What have you not worn or a year or so? Chances are you won’t wear it again, but the reason you bought it in the irst place was because you loved the abric, print or colour. How would that sweater look as a pillow cover? Perhaps you’ve moved house and your curtains are too small; why not use them to cover an old chair or make a bag? Looking at all your neglected clothes and abrics in this way opens up so many possibilities. You can easily make a start on reashioning your wardrobe without the extra cost o buying items to transorm.
We’ve also explored diferent techniques in each project – English paper piecing, piping, itting zips, dyeing and elting – to show the versatility o reashioned abrics. We hope you’ll ind them useul when you come up with your own designs and ideas, too.
We understand you won’t have or be able to buy the exact abrics we’ve used, or may wish to use new abric rom the roll instead o re-purposing; or these reasons, where possible, we’ve included abric requirements as well as the materials we’ve used.
The main thing is to enjoy what you’re making, and eel satisied that you’re doing something – no matter how small – to help the environment. Hopeully, we’ll inspire you to give it a go!
