Inroducion

I discovered needle felting at a local craft exhibition when a demonstrator gave me a needle to punch into some bright red wool. I was fascinated how the soft fibres could be worked into shape with a single barbed needle. Enthralled, I bought felting wool and needles to continue my new hobby at home. Keen to improve my needle felting skills, I experimented and began making little dogs. I wanted them to look as realistic as possible. Practice makes perfect, and I became proficient at needling even the tiniest detail. I found that making my own polymer clay sculpted eyes and noses gave me the flexibility to make any size, shape or colour that I chose, and they would fit the dogs perfectly. Eyelashes softened tiny eyes, and claws could be added to a chubby little puppy’s paws. There was always something new to learn and with so many breeds of dog, lack of variety was not a problem. Hidden away in a cupboard I have a box of misshapes, little unfinished woolly dogs that are waiting to be transformed by a felting needle. The great thing about this craft is that nothing is ever wasted – if you are not happy with your labrador because it looks more like a beagle, turn it into one, or brush out the wool and start again! It is not a mistake if you have learned something, and sometimes happy accidents happen. Needle felting is not an exact science and you will develop your own way of working that suits you. All good artists eventually find their own style. Each of the projects in this book is designed to increase your repertoire of skills in a userfriendly way. Stepbystep instructions, diagrams and pictures will lead you through the process of making each dog. You will be shown techniques to make the tiny dogs look convincingly lifelike and, as your confidence grows, you will be able to take elements from the different dog projects and, in a mixandmatch fashion, combine them to needle felt the breed, pose and colour pedigree pooch of your choice. Needle felting is a wonderful craft that is not too difficult or expensive, and everything you need to complete a project can be popped in a small bag and carried anywhere. Instead of doodling a poodle, with a little help from this book you could try needle felting one.
