Two life-changing events accompanied the writing of this book:
My kindred spirit, Eleanor, died,
and two months later my first grandchild, Liam, was born.
This book is dedicated to both of them.
What happens in meditation is what happens in our acts of creativity: We become united with the Divine Spirit, which is the Spirit of Creation and Creativity. Our sixth chakras become dwelling places for the Divine. We con-temple there, that is, we share a sacred temple with the Divine. We call it contemplation or unity or forgetfulness of separation and duality. And then creativity surely flows .

Foreword
A classic book on creating dolls from socks was my first introduction to Cindy Crandall-Frazier. Her book Sock Doll Workshop shows anyone who can thread a needle how to make a beloved plaything. Although sewing was technically out of the purview of Patternworks, my knitting supply catalog, I felt the book would be as empowering and captivating to my customers as it was to me. And so my relationship with Cindy began.
It turned out that Cindy had a passion for crochet. I asked what about the hook spoke to her (as knitting needles spoke to me). The answer came in a short essay called Why I Crochet, written in her characteristically thoughtful and thorough style. I ve learned to trust and admire the quality, integrity, and originality of Cindy s work. Years after selling Patternworks, an exceptionally skilled knitting friend asked me how to get the pattern for Cindy s Community Crochet Adult Earflap Hat, which struck her as the essential warm hat-high praise, indeed, coming from this knitter.
What makes a particular pattern or book so compelling? The answer is contained in Contemplative Crochet: A Hands-On Guide for Interlocking Faith and Craft . Cindy invites readers to join her in tapping into that vein of wealth that ties us to a vastly creative universe and provides a cornucopia of inspiration, encouragement, tips, and nourishment for the way. It is a quest for finding the spiritual dimension in the rhythms of our lives.
At my weekly knitting group, my friends joined me in crocheting the book s Friends and Tea Cozy project, since we are kindred souls-already in and into the loop. Karen had been knitting a tea cozy the previous week and mentioned that knitting the beautiful corrugation was grueling work. This crochet pattern, however, provided the desired highly textured (and thermal) fabric. This change in craft knocked us out of the usual dynamic of the group. We worked as a team, helping one another along, and, actually-for the first time in our history-had long periods of silence. Wow! We laughed, some of us struggled, some fudged, and Cindy s instruction that this pattern is forgiving became our chorus. She was right. I m looking forward to see what new paths open for our group as a result of this experience.
Contemplative Crochet was obviously a labor of love, written from the point of view of a wise and joyful woman who understands the wisdom of just enough and who can articulate what is close to her heart. I know it did me good to read this book, and I ll be coming back to it again.

Introduction
W ith hook in hand, I pause to contemplate the connections of my spirit to my hands, my hands to my craft. I am only one person at only one point on a never-ending continuum. As you join me, each of you will be starting in a different place. You may be new to crochet or a veteran crocheter. You may have picked up this book because you already sense a link between the quieting rhythm of crochet and the contemplative quality of spiritual seeking. You may have been reared in a spiritual setting or you may have chosen a spiritual home for yourself as you grew in your understanding of the Divine. Maybe you are a lifelong member of your chosen faith community but are looking for a way to personalize and deepen your spiritual life. Or perhaps you do not feel comfortable with formalized spiritual ideas, but seek a centering practice that will enrich your faith.
I learned my first spiritual lessons in a little white Methodist Church in a small town in upstate New York. One of the Sunday school stories that touched me most was the story of the good Samaritan, in which one person went out of his way-both personally and culturally-to help a stranger in need. I got it. This lesson of radical acceptance and radical love would eventually lead me away from my childhood church and on to a new spiritual adventure.
When my young friend Dolly invited me to attend meeting (a general term for Quaker worship gatherings) with her and her family, I was introduced to meditative silence as worship. In a Quaker meeting, the silence is broken only by the occasional person speaking a carefully listened for spiritual message. When I started to crochet, I realized that the meditative rhythm of crochet felt akin to attending a silent meeting.
Since childhood, I have been drawn to handwork of all kinds, especially to fiber and the fiber arts. In crochet, I found a range of philosophical and spiritual ties that fit together well for me. I especially value the intimacy of yarn and hands, and I marvel at being able to create beauty or to compassionately warm another person.
I have chosen a contemplative faith community. I have chosen a contemplative craft. In Contemplative Crochet, I have gathered a workbasket full of information, stories, and musings that have come from many corners of my life and link crochet and spiritual life in diverse ways. As you read, you will find phrases and ideas that have come from my life as a Quaker, as well as lessons that crochet itself has taught me.
I write from the perspective that everything we do is sacred, as long as it is done mindfully, inviting the Sacred into it. Each chapter concludes with a crochet project, some of which serve as simple reminders of a spiritual concept, others as actual tools to incorporate contemplation into your crochet practice.
Chapter 1 , Roots and Wings, is an exploration of what keeps our feet on the ground and wh
