There can be no doubt that when you think about boxing quiz books the name Ralph Oates springs to mind. Ralph has, through sheer hard work, become recognised as the leading compiler of boxing quiz books in the country. To have published World Heavyweight Boxing Champions Elite (1987) Know Your Boxing (1991) Boxing Clever (1994) Boxing Shadows (1997) The Heavyweight Boxing Quiz Book (2002) The Muhammad Ali Boxing Quiz Book (2007) and now The Ultimate Boxing Quiz Book is most certainly proof that he stands alone in his chosen field. Ralph, a former junior amateur boxer, has an enthusiasm for the sport that only those who have participated in it could understand. With his diligence and eye for detail, just like the other books he has compiled The Ultimate Boxing Quiz Book is sure to be a success. His expertise on the subject also made him an obvious choice to write a column for the Essex Courier, which ran for almost three years. INTRODUCTION

Boxing is a sport that over the years has produced many exciting moments and with it an equal number of memories that we can often call upon from time to time when talking about our favourite fights or boxers in general. Now and again, however, a fact can slip our minds or we find that our recollections of specific details of events have faded with the passing of time, so for instance we might recall a contest that we are sure had ended with a points decision, whereas it had actually finished when the referee stopped the bout. This, I feel, is what makes a quiz book on your favourite sport an interesting challenge. Clearly many fans of the game will be able to answer certain questions fairly easily and quickly, but others might have followers of the noble art thinking long and hard and then resorting to searching for any relevant record books to find the definitive answer. It would be true to say that it is very difficult these days to specify who is really the actual world champion in any respective weight division, as various governing bodies duly recognise a different world title holder at any one time. So it is therefore refreshing and good for the game that more often than not the rival champions at the same weight do eventually meet in the ring to do battle and thus determine who is the better man. The sport has its critics, of that there is no doubt, but nevertheless boxing has produced a number of great fighters who are known the world over, even by non-followers of the game - men such as Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, Rocky Marciano, Sugar Ray Robinson, Lennox Lewis and many, many more, who have been a credit both inside and outside of the ring. I hope you will enjoy the many questions in this book and indeed have fun finding out just how much you know about that square ring and those who perform inside the ropes.
