“TEN GAMES YOU CAN PLAY AT THE DROP OF A HAT … . PLUS”
The purpose for this collection of frivolous fillers of failed fun gatherings, is three fold, but before I clarify those, let me assure you, that nowhere, in this package will you find a rule or reason to drop a hat of any kind. The statement … “at the drop of a hat” generally pertains to something that begins at the immediate suggestion or attempt at an action or activity. Eg. “He would take off for a pizza at the drop … . etc. OR “She gets her hair done at the drop of … . etc.” The meaning, referring to these games is that they need no special props, and can be played anywhere, anytime, with stuff always within reach.
Now as to the purpose: FIRST: To pick up a sagging period that occurs in most parties to spice up the evening. TWO: To become the hit of the party with your ability to create a unique way to save a sagging event, And THREE: It’s a great way to meet someone of interest with whom you’d like to get to know better. By the way, the gathering need not be a big affair. As few as 4 or 5 is fine.
If you’re the kind of person at a party, or gathering of friends, relatives or other grouping, who , while sitting back listening to the sad efforts of mental foreplay, and supposed intellectual dribble from others, while you try to find a slot, into which you can interject a contribution, without sounding too far above the party norm, then you’ve come to the right book.
Somewhere during the night, the event will hit a lull, a dull period when most of the guests have wound down, and run out of witty fascinating conversation, but there is still a feeling that they don’t want it to be over yet. This is your cue to come up with the suggestion of playing a game. There are a few ways to ease into this so that you aren’t quickly dismissed as a distraction or annoyance, instead of someone who can revive the dead! I’ll reserve explaining each of these before each of the games. Playing a game at this point should appeal to most, if not, go out and find someone on the corner holding a handmade sign … you’ll have more fun. However, should they be interested, you’ll be on your way to being king for the night. The more you play these games, the more you’ll be able to gauge, which game to start with, based on the size and type of crowd you may have at that time. Once they have played one game, most times they’ll want to know what’s next. There are a good number of interactive as well as mentally stimulating games from which you can choose to offer your members. With this in mind let’s have some fun!
GAME NUMBER ONE: CHIANESE FORKS
WHAT YOU NEED
This game can be played with real forks, plastic forks or any multiple item (cutlery is best). You can call the game whatever is most appropriate. If spoons, it can be called, SWEEDISH SPOONS. If using knives … . “RUSSIAN KNIVES” or whatever you decide, that makes sense. By using another country name, the thought is suggested that the forks will be showing a certain number in a pattern with some significance from that country. It really is only a distraction from the actual pattern.
OBJECT OF THE GAME
The participants must guess “how to see” the number represented, from zero to ten, as misdirected by you, according to the positions of the forks. IN REALITY, and most importantly, the positions of your FINGERS, placed at or near the forks will actually be the way the numbers are shown. The number of fingers will be the number that has to be guessed
HOW TO PLAY THE GAME
You, as the presenter, take the forks and prepare to arrange them in any pattern you wish, on a table top, the floor, or any flat area where all who are playing, can plainly see the layout. You then explain as follows: Using your own words, if you wish … . “I’m going to place these in a certain order. When I’m finished, you will plainly see a number, from zero to ten.”
The next part, is very important to impress upon the players, so you can maintain control. You’ll say, “ Now, to be an insider in the game, when you see the number, DON’T blurt out the secret! You want to join me to see how long it takes for others to figure it out, and become one of the insiders, who know the number. So is everybody r eady??”
At this point you will place the forks in a pattern of your choice, and then lay your hands casually by the forks, with the number of your fingers displaying a number from 0 to 10. You ask , “ What number is that? (or) What number do you see? Let people guess. As obvious as you may think it is, it will take a few times for people to see that your fingers are the numbers. Eventually someone may guess the right number (we’ll call him Joe). You announce, “Number (**) is the correct, number!” You will probably have to check to see if Joe has really guessed how it’s done or just made a lucky guess. So you will repeat the process, but this time you will state that you want Joe to guess first, and this time you will only change 2 or 3 forks, then place your fingers (the number), then ask Joe to tell you the number he sees. If he guesses incorrectly, you’ll know that he is not yet an insider, and you’ll tell him his first guess, was just a lucky guess. If, on the other hand, he guesses correctly, you may welcome him , conditionally , into the insider’s club. But be careful, because there have been times when people have guessed 2, 3, even 4 times correctly and then miss the next time. If this happens, Joe is either very lucky or slightly psychic. In any event you must withdraw his status from the Insider’s Club , until he proves he’s got it!
Occasionally someone in the crowd may point to your fingers or hands and start to blurt out the secret. You can cut them off with an … “Ahhh! Tut tut tut! Remember what I said. Don’t spoil it for others who
