FOREWORD
I am honoured to have been asked to write the foreword to ‘The Sunderland AFC Quiz Book’ compiled by Chris Cowlin and Marc White. I followed Denis Smith to Sunderland in 1987 when I left York City. I had a great first season at Roker Park, finishing the clubs top goal scorer and the club winning the Third Division Championship. A few years later we got promoted to the First Division by winning the Second Division play-off final. I will always remember my time at the club as it was a special four years in my life. It was also a real personal achievement winning two England under-21 caps and an England B Cap whilst I was with the club. The history of Sunderland Football Club is long and varied and I’m sure the questions included in this book will bring back plenty of memories. Having been fortunate enough to see a preview of this book, I know that Sunderland fans of all ages will be entertained for hours with questions about the Black Cats past and present. As the club continues to write new chapters in its history, it’s always fitting to remember what went before. I hope you all enjoy this wonderful quiz book as much as I did.

I would also like to thank everyone for their comments and reviews (which can be found at the back of the book). I would also like to thank Lindsay Douglas and Nik McDonald at Sunderland Football Club for their help during the book’s compilation. I have thoroughly enjoyed working on this book, I have always liked Sunderland as a club and their supporters are magnificent! I really hope you enjoy this book. Hopefully it should bring back some wonderful memories of this fantastic club! In closing, I would like to thank all my friends and family for encouraging me to complete this project.
