FOREWORD ByGaryMackay
It was a great pleasure to be asked to provide the foreword
for this, The Official Heart of Midlothian Quiz Book. I’ve been
a supporter of this wonderful team for over 40 years now, and
for seventeen of them, I was privileged enough as a player, to
make more appearances for the club than any other person.
As both a supporter and as a player, those four decades have
brought a multitude of highs and lows. The 70s led to a massive decline in fortunes, as the club was relegated and promoted almost year in/year out for seven years before the
greatly respected era of the 80s under Alex MacDonald. Hearts have also played regularly and performed well in Europe. We’ve dominated the Edinburgh derby and of course won two Scottish Cups; both of which sparked off massive street celebrations in Gorgie. However, as well as all the great victories throughout those times, there have also been a whole host of painful defeats to endure; and often it’s events
off the pitch that are as much debated as the football played
on it. Hearts are a big talking point, simply because the club
means so much to so many people, and even those who don’t
support us still like to methodically study what’s going on at
Tynecastle! Heart of Midlothian is an institution steeped in
history and drama, and this quiz book is the perfect vehicle for
those Hearts’ debates and conversations to keep going.
v
As supporters we all cherish the club and we want its future
to be both stable and prosperous. Nevertheless, it’s the past that gives our present day predicaments something to be compared with. This book is all about recollecting the past; those great games, the great goals and the great players. Hearts have had an eventful past to say the least, and I hope
you enjoy remembering it as you make your way through a
thousand quiz questions on the greatest and most successful
football team Edinburgh has ever produced.
Enjoy the book! GaryMackay

INTRODUCTION ByChrisCowlin
I would first of all like to thank Gary Mackay for writing the
foreword to this book. I am very grateful for his help on this
project and was truly delighted when he agreed to write a few
words. I would also like to thank everyone for their comments
and reviews (which can be found at the back of the book).
I would also like to thank Stephen McMenemy and Yifan Wu at Hearts for their help and advice during the book’s compilation. I have thoroughly enjoyed working on this book and researching the history of the club and its players.
It was great working with Andrew-Henry Bowie for the first
time. I really hope you enjoy this book. Hopefully it should
bring back some wonderful memories of this fantastic club!
In closing, I would like to thank all my friends and family for
encouraging me to complete this project.
Best wishes Chris Cowlin

INTRODUCTION ByAndrew-HenryBowie
Heart of Midlothian FC: is there a finer name for a football team anywhere in the world? There is something quite magical about this old Edinburgh institution, yet its story is anything but a fairytale. The club’s heritage is magnificent. The beautiful capital city of Edinburgh, the Royal Mile and the
Heart of Midlothian cobble stones; our 1874 birth, the dark maroon jersey, the romantic heart-shaped crest, a glorious past and of course – that wonderful name. There are only a
dozen professional football clubs in the world that can allege
to be older in existence than Heart of Midlothian, yet few can
claim to have such a vibrant, tumultuous and often tragic
history. As a Hearts supporter, I’ve followed the club since the
days when even getting out of Scottish football’s second tier
was proving to be too much of an ask, and yet I was one of
the lucky ones! If every silver lining has a cloud, then it’s those
fantastic moments that sporadically come along that puts
every defeat into context (and I’m gleefully writing this bit
the day after we soundly beat Hibs on their own patch in the Scottish Cup). In my time as a supporter, there’s been relegation; an agonising Championship loss and whole load of
snatching defeats from the jaws of victory. Add to that a
generation of heroes, two Scottish Cup wins and a multitude
of great games and glorious goals to savour. This book is, on
viii
the whole, a reminder of the good times and great times; and
may we live in interesting times. My vision when compiling
this book was to one day take it round to my brother, Bobby’s
house and have a Hearts-themed ‘pub quiz’ with some friends.
No doubt when it happens, I’ll be on the receiving end of a torrent of verbal abuse as my keen knowledge of Heart of Midlothian puts his to diabolical shame. What would be even
better than that is the Hearts family up and down the country, and beyond doing much the same thing with their own nearest and dearest. After all that we’ve been through; I think
we deserve to take some time out to remind ourselves why it
really is all worth it in the end. I sincerely hope you enjoy it.
I’d like to dedicate this book to my wife, Lesley and to my daughter, Jude and to all the supporters, dreamers and believers of the famous Heart of Midlothian Football Club.
Best wishes Andrew-Henry Bowie
