Foreword
It is a real privilege to be asked by Kevin Snelgrove to write the foreword to this book and be given the opportunity to look back on the fantastic memories I have as a player for Frome Town FC. I am exceptionally grateful to everyone, who not only helped me as a player but have also had a huge influence on the club and its success over the years.
I can remember as a nineteen-year old being given the chance by Kingsley John to join him at Frome Town and make the step up to Western League Football. When I arrived for my first training session back in July 1999, I could immediately see that the new Chairman Paul McGuiness was starting to make changes at Badgers Hill. A new stand was being erected and the bar area was being spruced up ready for the following season. The pitch however looked like it was in desperate need of some water, with the length of the brown grass more like a hay field, which is a far cry from the football pitch I enjoyed playing on for so many seasons and that we see today.
I made my debut on 14th August 1999 after making the long trip down to Ilfracombe. A ground, for those that know it, where you play up hill in both the first and second half. Despite a 3-1 defeat, I did manage to score my first goal for the club. However, that first season was a challenging one, finishing at the bottom of the first division, although somehow avoiding relegation. I spent most of the season playing at right back but ended the season as top goal scorer with 12 goals.
Within a couple of years and under the management of Simon White we had one of the most memorable and successful seasons, winning the first division in style accumulating 102 points and reaching the Les Philips cup final at Twerton Park. I remember vividly the huge array of flags draped over the terraces behind the goal and the large following of supporters singing until the final whistle!
After a brief time away with Southend United and Bath City, Paul McGuiness made it possible for me to return to the club. I had an amazing 7 years, with some of the highlights being a goal tally of 46 in the 2006/07 season, captaining the side which went on to win the Somerset Premier Cup and getting promotion to the Southern League. I was also fortunate enough to play in the team that reached the quarter finals of the FA Vase, finally losing out to Jarrow Roofing.
I am extremely grateful to everyone who was involved with the club and I was privileged to have played for some great managers over the years. I still bump into a few of them with the likes of Andy Black, Paul Thorpe and Andy Crabtree, who are still involved with local clubs. I also had the pleasure of playing with some excellent players, getting to know some great people and establishing some really good friendships whilst playing for Frome.
Frome Town is a very special club with fantastic people and wonderful support. I think that most players that have been fortunate enough to play for the club will have fond memories of their time at Frome Town.
The club has been a big part of my life and my family’s, particularly my Dad ‘John’ and I feel honoured to have contributed to the club’s history with a total of 450 appearances and 292 goals.
I always check Frome Town’s results every Saturday and hope that the football club continues to be successful and there are more trophies to come.
Best Wishes
Mark Salter

Introduction
I would first like to thank all the staff at Frome Town Football Club for their help on this project. I have been a fan of this wonderful club since 1978 and have seen many highs and lows during this time. I can remember watching many home games stood at the Club house end with my late brother Paul and later-on with my daughters Samantha and Kate they were enjoyable days. With the likes of Dave Allen and Mark Salter scoring many goals, and the ever-present Steve Walkey and Centre-half Paul Thorpe all club legends along with many more who have worn the Frome shirt.
These days I don’t seem to get so much time as I would like attending the games but still keep up with the results and I have recently been watching the Frome Town Women on a Sunday and what a great team they have and I’ve been very impressed.
I hope you enjoy this book. Hopefully it should bring back some wonderful memories!
I have provided you with some very easy and very hard questions, so there is a good mixture.
In closing, I would like to thank all my friends and family for encouraging me to complete this book.
Best Wishes
Kevin Snelgrove
