Introduction
The moment I hear the opening bars of the Crossroads theme tune I am transported back to the late 1960s, sitting on the settee keeping my mum company, watching the comings and goings on at Meg Richardson’s motel, while we waited for my dad to come home from work. For 20 or so minutes each weekday evening we would be gripped by the mundane to melodramatic storylines. Wobbly sets and dubious acting were not as noticeable when watched on an often snowy 22 inch black and white TV and to be honest never detracted from our enjoyment. I remember feeling elated when Sandy’s eyes flickered as he came out his coma, shocked at Meg’s departure and devastated when Benny’s fiancé died. The last episode of the original series I watched on my own at my girlfriend’s flat, my mum having died a couple of years earlier, marked the end of an era. By the time the show was relaunched in 2001 I was married with three children, but despite finding favour initially, the ratings didn’t satisfy ITVs top bosses. Crossroads was dramatically removed from the schedule and returned in 2003 in a camp Dynasty-style format. Probably the kindest thing that can be said about this third, short-lived version is that thankfully it all turned out to be a Bobby Ewing!
Dedicated to my mum, this quiz book of 350 questions is for all Crossroads fans and covers every aspect of the soap, from its origins, cast and characters through to storylines and trivia. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have in compiling it.
