Your Invitation to Dance before the Lord Jesus Christ
Written for God’s glory in honor of:
Buck who was my loving husband, partner in life, and best friend,
And
Bruce and Heather, our children, our life gifts of God’s love
Marriage is not a ritual or an end.
It is a long, intricate, intimate dance together,
and nothing matters more
than your own sense of balance
and choice of partner.

Introduction
Let’s Dance—1-2-3-4
L ove is like dancing. You can look at the steps on a paper chart. You can then place your feet on the floor into the paper footprints indicated. Take step 1, move on to step 2, then step 3, and finally step 4. You’ve accomplished the dance technically. What a concept! You can dance.
Not exactly! It takes lots and lots and lots of practice. You must do 1-2-3-4 over and over and over to be able to dance with a great deal of finesse.
Often when we marry, we believe we are in love and things couldn’t get any better. Believe me, marriage takes constant work and refining, massaged with tender loving care. The final days you have together can be much more exciting and intensely more romantic than those early days of romance. Those early days are just the beginning.
This book, We Danced, is written to serve as a couple’s devotional for God’s glory. Whether used as a reading in the early morning or in the late evening, I challenge you as a couple to read an excerpt from our lives, think of your own similar but unique circumstances, and receive the dance tip as a tool to grow closer in your marriage relationship.
The Lord did a marvelous work in our lives. This is His story and for His glory!
He wants to do a marvelous work in your marriage relationship as well. Begin a new work to make your dance alive and vibrant from now till your last breath together. Continue to refine your marriage skills as you work toward the goal as partners through life. There are going to be times where you swing and your partner sways. There are going to be times when it might seem you are both fighting for the lead. At other times, you just melt into each other’s arms and everything is totally synchronized. You two want that moment in time to last forever!
It’s up to the two of you—both of you—to work to make those moments last. If you are willing to work, let’s get started. Let me share excerpts from our dance to encourage the two of you!
EXCERPT 1
Buck and Lin Step onto the Dance Floor
T he scene opens with eight singles sitting around a table in a college cafeteria. Debbie, Donna, Carol, and I were attending a Campus Prologue Weekend sponsored by Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois for all high school seniors. While I had no intention of attending this university, I wanted to go with my girlfriends for the weekend. My plan was to attend another university but to use this weekend to determine my field of study. I planned to visit the colleges of music, education, and English to choose the degree I would pursue.
As with all love stories, my life began a wonderful adventure that November weekend. I began to learn what it meant to dance.
My friends and I were scheduled to meet a friend, Dave, who was then attending Millikin. He met us for lunch at the appointed time with three of his friends: Scott, Harold, and Buck. After a casual get-acquainted lunch, Buck invited all of us girls on a personally guided tour of the campus. Buck was quite the gentleman on the tour, opening the doors for us as we passed from one building to another. Like always, I took it for granted that I deserved that gentlemanly consideration. Later my friend pointed out (in front of Buck) that not once had I thanked Buck for opening the doors for us. From that moment on, my thank-you—with a curtsy at each door—became a highlight of the tour, and it was always accompanied with flirtatious laughter.
Slowly but surely, each of the girls dropped out of the tour. At the end of the tour, Buck asked if I would attend the dance on campus with him that night. I accepted his invitation, and we attended the dance in his dorm’s recreation hall. We began talking—and we danced!
Somewhere in the process of the tour and the dance, Buck and I exchanged addresses and phone numbers. When I returned home, I wrote him a thank-you note for helping to make our Millikin University weekend memorable. Buck and I continued to correspond via written letters through the holidays.
Mid-January I received a letter from Buck. The letter included an invitation for me to attend a formal dance held at the Elks Club near the campus. I later found out this was the college dance of the year. I borrowed a blue-green brocade dress. We were to go dancing!
My heart pounded as I watched from my bedroom window as Buck’s 1963 Olds pulled into our driveway. I waited upstairs but watched as he came to the door. He was very handsome and seemed quite relaxed and comfortable as he met my dad at the door. I made my entrance, and we talked with my brother and my parents.
We arrived at the hall, which was decorated beautifully in red and whit
