Sample Book Insights:
#1 Bookshops are full of stories. The stories of bookshop owners, and all the books they read that made them fall in love with reading. The stories of authors, and why they wrote their first book. The stories of customers who walk through the door.
#2 The book industry has changed a lot over the past few centuries. Bookshops are closing due to increased rents, business rates, and retail giants undercutting prices. But bookshops are still relevant because so much of our lives is spent on computers, and the idea of a shopping experience is more important than ever before.
#3 Bookshops are still relevant today. They are magical places that instill a sense of wonder and adventure in children, and they offer a haven in a busy world for us to stop and think.

Insights from Chapter 2

#1

The Bookshop is a magic place filled with old books and treasures. It is the ideal bookshop.

#2

Wigtown, Scotland, was chosen to be the National Book Town of Scotland in 2012. It has a population of just 1,000 people, and ten people approached me within half an hour asking if I’d met Shaun Bythell yet. Shaun is a bit of a local legend. He runs the largest bookshop in Wigtown.

#3

I visited the Wigtown Book Festival opening party in Scotland. I was huddled in a tent with Shaun, who didn’t like me. But he still gave me a gin and tonic.

#4

Shaun’s bookshop is huge, and he has over 100,000 books on his shelves. He has a mezzanine floor in the middle of the shop with a double bed so people can stay during the festival.

#5

The author met Shaun at a book festival in California, and they began talking. A few months later, Jessica packed up her bags and flew from Los Angeles all the way to Scotland.

#6

I grew up in England, near Newcastle, and when I went to university in Edinburgh, I was amazed by the many bookshops there. I spent my free time visiting bookshops, and eventually got a job at the Edinburgh Bookshop.

#7

I worked in a bookshop, and I learned that parents would leave their children in the shop, and go across the road to Tesco. Toddlers would try to climb the shelves, and middle-aged women would break down in tears if we didn’t have the latest Twilight book in stock.

#8

I was obsessed with comics as a child, and I would spend my weekends visiting bookstores and libraries. I would eventually get a job at a bookshop in my town, and I would spend my lunch breaks reading books.

#9

Bookshops are important because they allow people to browse and discover new books. They are a place where you can build up a relationship with the bookseller, and they will always have something that you want to read.

#10

Bookshops are a great connection between writers and their readers. They allow writers to meet readers, and sell books to them. They are also places where I can buy books for research.

#11

I love recommending books to people. I would mainly stock children’s books in my bookshop, and let customers explore them. I would call my shop something like The Powerhouse because words are the most powerful things in the world.

#12

The bookshop where I work has had many events over the years, and they always involve cake. I suspect that events in bookshops are more successful when cake is involved.

#13

The Watermill, a bookshop in Scotland, was started by Jayne and Kevin Ramage ten years ago. They have transformed it into three floors of books, an art gallery, a homeware section, and a café.

#14

The Mainstreet Trading Company is a bookshop in Scotland that has expanded into a deli and home-ware section. They have a Book Burrow, where children can read and listen to audiobooks, and they sell cheese.

#15

I grew up in a bookshop, and I spent my teenage years helping out with stock-takes and unpacking books. I loved reading, and it helped me understand who I was and who I wanted to be.

#16

The British government commissioned three propaganda posters in 1939. The first poster said, Freedom is in Peril, and the other two said, Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution will bring us victory! The third poster was kept back and never sent out.

#17

The Old Pier Bookshop on the seafront in Morecambe is a second-hand and antiquarian bookshop owned by Tony Vettese. It’s full to the brim and, though it may not seem like it, Tony knows where everything is.
