In the Bible (Hebrews 11:1) it s tates: No w fait h is the subs t anc e o f things hoped for, the eviden c e o f thing s n ot seen. There a r e two parts to this verse. T he fir s t part is faith i s the substanc e o f thing s hoped f o r . The second part is faith i s th e evidenc e o f things n ot s een. So we have faith listed as both a s ubstance and a n eviden c e . Let's take this a step f u rther and list the definitions of b oth substance and evidence. T h e se def i nitions are from Webster’s New World Dictionary.
Substance: the real or essential part or e l ement of anything; es s ence, reality, or basic matter.
Evidence: t he conditi o n of bei n g evident. Ev id ent: easy t o see or pe r ceive; clear;
obvious; plain; apparent.
We have our hands full here. The r e is so much to this simple idea o f f a ith. It is a substance-- the r e al o r essent i al p a rt o f anythi n g —of that which we hope for. And it is also that which is evi d ent- - clear; obvio u s ; plain; appa r ent —of things not seen. Let us just say that faith is the essence of that whi c h we hope for and is the obvious of things n o t seen . It seems the r e is a co n nection bet w een that which we hope for and that which is not seen, as if our grea t est hopes a re not d ire c tly or perceptually seen fi r st and foremost. Perhaps when we see the es s ence of our hopes they become obvio u s. Now, if we co u ld get to the “essen c e” of this type of faith then our hopes would be di rectly seen. What I want to do in this article is define preci s e ly this t ype of faith so that our faith will w ork (produce results). How frustr a ti n g is life when the f a ith/belief we hold doesn't seem to do an y thing. Matthew 21:22 s tates: And all things, whatsoeve r ye s ha ll as k in p r ay e r , believi n g , ye sh a ll receive.
When? I know I have prayed f or t h i ngs f o r years and y e a r s. During those years I have always had the thought—if my fa i th was truly based in the actu a l or correct substance/essen c e, i n deed there would be the manifes ta tion of t he thing hoped for yet not seen. It seems that we have to g e t to a new root that hasn't b e en defined befo r e so our faith will actually work. We somehow need to change metaph y sical cha n nels in our minds and hearts so we don't just connect t o the source/cause of things b ut are actually in full alignme n t t o the source/cause of t hings—as i
