Description

In 2013, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, Myositis. My immune system had suddenly turned on me and was attacking all my muscles, it was very scary. I had gone from a very fit healthy person to someone who was struggling to walk. I felt like my life had been literally turned upside down overnight. The doctors told me there was no cause or cure and only wanted to put me on toxic medication. I did not accept that there was no cause, because the human body doesn't just turn on itself for no reason! After doing my own research, I discovered that the cause was too many antibiotics, leading to gut yeast overgrowth Candida Albicans, which then leads on to Leaky Gut Syndrome. LGS is where microscopic holes are made in the lining of the gut, the lumen, by the yeast itself, then food is then able to enter the bloodstream and provoke an immune reaction. The great wise Greek physician Hippocrates said... All disease begins in the gut!Autoimmune diseases are on the rise all over the world at an alarming rate, yet the cause is being completely ignored and only the symptoms are being treated, with very toxic medications that can have lifelong side effects. This is my journey of how I challenged and defied the doctors and cured myself, by following an autoimmune diet and taking anti fungals to kill the gut yeast overgrowth. I no longer need toxic medication, I've simply treated the cause of my illness. I've written this book to share my knowledge and to try and help others with any illness, including autoimmune diseases and even cancer! If you treat the cause your body will recover to full health once again. Also included is the autoimmune diet that I followed, which got me back to full health.

Foreword
I felt compelled to write this book and it goes out to all those of you who are suffering with an illness. If you treat the cause, you will recover and live a healthy life again.
The old great wise Greek physician Hippocrates said ...
‘All disease begins in the gut’.
Sadly, today this is being completely ignored by the medical profession.
‘Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food’.
Also included is the autoimmune diet plan and food list that I followed that helped me heal my gut, as well as a list of natural supplements and antifungals.
It also contains a list of helpful books, including autoimmune cookbooks as well as links to useful websites.
The Diagnosis
It was dark, rainy, cold October morning in 2012. It was about 8.30 am and I was driving to work, I worked as a Legal PA in Clifton, Bristol. As usual, I was feeling extremely tired to the point where I could hardly keep my eyes open and my whole body felt exhausted. But today was different, strange dark thoughts were running through my mind. I thought if I drive my car into a brick wall and I end up in a coma, at least then I can have a nice long sleep, I felt beyond exhausted. Those clearly are not the thoughts of a rational well person.
I had not been feeling well for a few months, very tired all the time, but it was a fatigue that was off the scale. Also, my legs had started to feel heavy. I was still going to my weekly Zumba class at my local gym, but I was finding the class more and more difficult. I had recently run the Race for Life with a friend, but I had really struggled to even get round the course and ended up walking most of it. At the persistence of my mum, I had been to the doctor, and she had done a blood test, the results showed that my liver enzymes were raised. What could have caused that? I asked, we don’t know, she replied, but come back in a few weeks and we’ll do another test, they will probably be lower next time, she said.
What was causing my liver enzymes to rise? I didn’t smoke, I wasn’t a regular drinker, I had a healthy diet and I exercised regularly, it was a mystery. I later learned that it was both inflammation as well as the deadly toxins from candida albicans causing my liver enzymes to rise, basically my liver was overloaded and struggling to cope.
I had been a healthy child, my mum was a great cook and we always had good home cooked meals, but for some reason from a baby I had suffered with regular bouts of tonsillitis which continued well into my adulthood. But instead of them taking my tonsils out, I was just given more and more antibiotics. I strongly feel that at some point in my childhood either a doctor, or my parents should have insisted my tonsils were taken out. It would have saved me years of suffering and misery and I feel very let down by them all. On a few occasions I had even been admitted to hospital and put on an antibiotic drip, due to my tonsillitis being so bad. Every time I got tonsillitis, it was just worse and worse, and I needed stronger antibiotics. Little did I know this was to have a major impact on my health and my life in the future. Antibiotics are mycotoxins and every round of antibiotics I was given, meant I was a ticking time bomb for an autoimmune disease, it was just a matter of time. I’m surprised it took as long as it did.
I had to pull my car over at a bus stop. I sat there and cried feeling scared, knowing something was wrong with me, but I didn’t know what. I called my mum, she said drive to my house, and I will make you a cup of tea. I turned up on her doorstep tears streaming down my face. She put the kettle on, but when I sat down, I said, mum I can hardly cross my legs, they feel so heavy. I felt both physically and mentally exhausted. I was in such a distressed state, so she phoned my boss for me and said that I wasn’t well and couldn’t come into work.
I started to feel weaker by the day and went back to the doctor two weeks later and she did another blood test, but this time my liver enzymes had gone even higher. This was a worry, what was causing this? Again, she didn’t know.
In the end, I had many appointments and saw four different doctors, one doctor said to me, we all get aches and pains, and you just have to live with it, but this was much more than just aches and pains, my legs felt like concrete! Did I have cancer? I asked, no, he said your white cell count is normal.
Eventually, after many appointments I was lucky enough to see a new doctor who at last gave me a diagnosis. I think you have a condition called myositis he said, it’s quite rare, I’m going to send you to see a specialist consultant at Southmead Hospital.
Two days later I was sat in front of my consultant, who after a lengthy discussion about my symptoms, lots of blood tests and an examination confirmed that I had myositis, a rare autoimmune disease.
What was myositis? I had never heard of it let alone autoimmune diseases. He explained that it’s where the immune system is attacking all the muscles. But why? I asked. We don’t know, he said.
He then said, we need to start you on some medication urgently to bring down the inflammation in your body. He had done a specific inflammation blood test which all the previous doctors had missed. It showed that my inflammatory markers were extremely high. A normal level was under 50 but mine was over 7,000! He told me he had seen cases far worse, one of his patients had registered at 35,000. I was shocked and surprised they were still alive, as I was feeling very unwell at 7,000.
To confirm his diagnosis, I was sent for an MRI scan on my legs. He showed me the results when they came through, my muscles were all white with inflammation. I was grateful he didn’t do a muscle biopsy which is often done with myositis patients, because it’s very painful and I feel completely unnecessary, as blood tests and scans are usually enough for an accurate diagnosis.
I was however sent for an electromyography test. It’s where pads are placed on the legs then electricity is passed through them, creating small electric shocks. It measures muscle damage, and I could see on the screen that mine was off the scale. The test is very painful, and I feel it’s also unnecessary.
I was also sent for heart and liver scans, as well as lung function tests. Thankfully my heart and lungs were OK, but the results of my liver test showed that I had non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. How was that even possible? I thought, my diet had always been very healthy, and I had exercised regularly. Later during my research, I was to learn that candida albicans can dump fat into the liver, leading to non-alcoholic fatty liver.
By now it was December and only one week away from Christmas. My consultant said that he would start me on a course of treatment after Christmas, so I went home feeling hopeful that I had at last had a diagnosis and a treatment plan. I was going to be OK … or so I thought.
Over the next few days, I started to feel worse, I tried my best to do some Christmas shopping, but I was feeling weak and had zero energy and little enthusiasm. I had just about managed to get some food shopping in ready for Christmas.
On Christmas Day my boyfriend came over. I tried my best to be cheerful, but I was feeling very unwell and just wanted to go to bed. He went back to Wales on Boxing Day to watch the football, as he was a regular Cardiff City supporter, but he said he would come back over later after the game.
After he had left, I went for a lie down, all my muscles were painful and the fatigue was unbelievable, I felt rotten. My mum called to see how I was. I don’t feel well at all Mum, I said, I feel really weak and rough. I’m coming over, she said.
When she arrived, I was laying on my bed feeling exhausted and ill. My consultant had said if my condition rapidly got worse or I developed chest pains then I was to phone for an ambulance. Unfortunately for me, my condition had rapidly got worse, and I now also had chest pains, so my mum phoned for an ambu
