Acknowledgments
Many people and organizations contributed greatly to the completion of this book. There were many helping hands!
I would like to thank the American Boxer Club and its members and friends for furnishing valuable information and many of the outstanding photographs in these pages. In addition, I would like to acknowledge the members of the Showboxer and Boxer Mailing Lists (online) for furnishing additional pictures. Special mention must be made of Marcia Adams, whose professional photo concentration on the Boxer for a number of years was so very helpful to me. Appreciation also goes to Pat Mullen for helping to track down some hard-to-find images and to Norman Crook, Rhonda Dyer, Eleanor Linderholm-Wood, Chris Markos, Tom Nutting and Lynda Yon.
When statistical information was needed, friends searched their archives to supply it. Thanks especially to Virginia Zurflieh for never throwing anything away! Heartfelt thanks also to Ted Fickes, who has been our friend and mentor for all these years. Tracy Hendrickson and Michelle McArdle, who work tirelessly in Boxer Rescue, were an inspiration.
I would like to thank my very understanding editor, Nicole Moustaki, who has been a delight to work with from start to finish. Her professionalism has enabled the manuscript to proceed smoothly and without delay.
Finally, I owe a great deal of gratitude to my husband David. His patience throughout this project was greatly appreciated. His artistic eye and the Boxer experiences we have shared for almost thirty years really make up the very fabric of this volume.

Introduction
In 1970, my husband and I, newly married, decided to acquire a dog. David thought Gordon Setters were nice, and I wanted a Boxer like Duchess, the dog of my childhood. David informed me that Boxers were pretty ugly, and remembered being disgusted as a child when he saw a friend actually kiss his Boxer full on the muzzle.
Referred by respected breeders, we went to see a litter of Gordon Setters and a litter of Boxers. Both of us, ironically, thought the Gordons were too boisterous for us (that suited me just fine!). The Boxers, mere babes, were of course adorable. We left the breeder s house with no commitments made by anyone-David thought we should think it over, and the breeder wasn t sure we were actually bona fide show people. I was in tears. Eventually, we returned to the breeder, convinced her that we were good people, and played with the pups some more. That is how the future American and Canadian Ch. Gray Roy s Minstrel Boy ( Casey ) came to live with us when he was about 10 weeks old. David was a Boxer convert on the spot.
I remember Casey hanging over the big cardboard box that we had brought with us to carry him home (Crate? What crate?). Such a sweet face! He still had remnants of puppy breath and already displayed a disposition that was gentle and fun at the same time. He grew up a country dog, always with us-even lying at our feet in the local pharmacy/restaurant. The fact that people thought he was striking and beautiful eventually prompted us to take him to a sanctioned match, then some point shows, and the rest, as they say, is history. He finished with five majors and is a Legion of Merit Sire. He never left us until the day he died in our arms.

Ch. Gray Roy s Minstrel Boy, LOM Casey, Legion of Merit sire. (Eduardo)
That is the way Boxers capture our hearts and make their way into the deepest recesses of our psyches. There is something about them-their noble bearing, the way those eyes touch us, their playful nature, their challenge to us to make them obey when they would rather not. That is why people who have once owned a Boxer, who stop you and your dog on the street, always tell you long tales about the special animal they once loved.
The Boxer is exactly what you see. He is a beautiful, regal creature whose clean lines hide nothing. But what most endears him to us is his equanimity with children, his zest for life, his ever wagging tail, the mischief in his soul. Indeed, our lives have been enriched beyond measure because of the love of a dog. We have been adopted by that most irrepressible of clowns, that most intuitive of comforters, that most selfless of companions-the Boxer.

C HAPTER 1

Meet the Boxer
Congratulations! You have decided to share your life with a Boxer, one of the most engaging of all dog breeds. He will make you laugh; he will make you cry; he will try your patience; he will outwit you when he can. And he will love you with an intensity that will surprise and amaze you. He will be your canine soul mate.
Although the Boxer s origins are ancient (recognizable antecedents appeared in the art of the Assyrians around 1500 B.C .), the breed that we know today was first developed and refined in Germany in the nineteenth century. Used at that time on ducal estates as a hunting dog, the
