introduction
T his book is written for Poodle owners who would like to clip and care for their own pets, for prospective show exhibitors and for professional groomers. Anyone who is generally interested can learn how to set patterns and to scissor by careful study of the step-by-step, illustrated instructions provided.
Getting Acquainted
The fact that the Poodle is and has been one of the most popular breeds in the United States and many other countries is unquestionably true because Poodles are splendid animals. They come in a variety of sizes and colors, they are intelligent, they are wonderful companions, they are elegant looking and they can be trimmed in a variety of styles to suit their owners lifestyle and personal preferences, as well as the dog s own comfort.
For hundreds of years the Poodle has existed very much as we know the breed today. The Poodle undoubtedly originated as a water retriever, and it has been speculated that he might have been the original Water Spaniel. The Standard Poodle is the oldest of the three varieties; the smaller varieties (Miniature and Toy) became well known as trick dogs in circuses, as truffle dogs and as noble companions.
The show trims that we see in the ring today, the Continental and English Saddle, are not just modern-day fads-they are part of the Poodle s history. The age-old tradition of trimming the Poodle to resemble a lion stemmed from making his retrieving work more functional. When the long coat got wet, it became heavy; the area behind the ribs was trimmed to make movement easier, but small tufts of hair were left to cover the joints and keep them warm. The hair was left long over the rib cage to protect the heart and chest from the cold.
As time passed, grooming styles have come and gone. The old lion trim became the predecessor of the traditional show trims of today. Through the years, the dog fancy has seen some smart pet styles that emphasized the elegance of the Poodle become fashionable; some other pet clips were so bizarre that they swiftly lost favor, thank heavens!
Whatever variety you own, Poodles require much more attention than most other breeds. They must be brushed, bathed and clipped regularly because if they are not cared for, they become shaggy. Regular grooming is important not only to make a Poodle look better, but also for his good health and mental fitness. Most professionals will agree that when a dog is groomed regularly, he is less likely to suffer from mats, tangles, skin problems, ear infections, overgrown toenails or infestation by external parasites. In addition, Poodles are proud animals. They know when they look their best, and they really enjoy the attention and praise people give them when they appear perfectly groomed.
