Description

Using none of the traditional routes, Winona Ryder established herself as the single most exciting actress of her generation. From her Hollywood movie debut at the age of thirteen to starring alongside Sigourney Weaver in Alien Resurrection, this affectionate biography traces the events and circumstances that shaped her career and propelled her from teen star to cultural icon. This specially prepared digital edition has been completely revised by restoring passages cut out of the original 1998 manuscript together with the addition of new material.

Praise for the original print version of this book:
“Overall, this biography is a very interesting read. The chronological nature of the book is especially useful if referring back to it at a later point, and there is also a filmography and a list of Winona’s awards and nominations at the back. Combined with this is a comprehensive index, making it easy to find references to particular films and people, should you wish to do so. Although it can never be as insightful as an authorised biography, or indeed an autobiography, this book is just as good as it can be. By collating information from a diverse selection of sources, Nigel Goodall has produced a good book that is well worth reading, whether you’re a fan of Winona Ryder or not.”
- T J Mackey, Dooyou Online
“The book reads as though it is an authorised biography written with Ryder’s co-operation. By liberally using quotes from other sources, Goodall makes the book read as through he interviewed the actress, who comes across as an intelligent, talented and sensitive young woman.”
- Chris Samson, Petaluma Argus-Courier
“Early on Goodall admits his unabashed affection for his subject. Yet despite the warning, this remains a balanced and sprightly read that paints a rounded picture, yet it refrains from the usual muck-racking in favour of a detailed appraisal of her film career and family life. A sustained and erudite piece.”
- Dan Rider, Total Film
About the Author
Nigel Goodall wrote Winona Ryder: The Biography, the first British biography of the American Actress, in 1998. It was nominated for the Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction, became a Daily Telegraph bestseller, and the source for several major TV documentaries transmitted in the UK, USA and Canada. The book also won Nigel recognition as Winona’s key biographer. Now long out of print, this digital edition has been completely revised by restoring passages cut out of the original manuscript together with the addition of new material.
Nigel is also the author of more than 20 books including several bestselling biographies of Johnny Depp, all of which have been translated into various languages throughout the world. Both What’s Eating Johnny Depp and The Secret World of Johnny Depp still remain on his publisher’s bestseller list.
Among the other biographies Nigel has written are Christian Slater, Demi Moore, Ray Winstone, David Tennant and Kylie Minogue. His Winona research archives serve as a primary resource for television, magazines and libraries.
Nigel, who has also written articles for magazines such as Record Collector and TV Times, lives in Sussex, England, from where he travels occasionally to New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles for research and author interviews.

Author’s Note
from original print edition
In August 1996, I asked Winona Ryder’s publicist, Mara Buxbaum, whether Winona would be interested in cooperating with a biography to be published in the landmark year of her twentieth film, Alien Resurrection. Although the production process for one reason or another delayed publication, this biography is intended to reflect that benchmark of achievement as Winona celebrates her first decade in the entertainment industry.
Within a few days, Mara wrote me a polite refusal saying that Winona had a great deal more to do professionally, and that she was much too young to start thinking about a biography. Certainly both points are true. However, not since Natalie Wood has an American actress successfully maintained a screen career from adolescence to adulthood in the full glare of the Hollywood spotlight.
Although now barely into her mid-twenties, Winona Ryder has already cemented her reputation as one of the most admired and brightest young stars in Hollywood today. Her first starring role was only her second film ever and, since then, in little more than twelve years, she has established herself as the most significant and exciting actress of her generation.
Those who know me are aware that I did not need much persuasion to decide to go ahead with this book. For me, it has been a fascinating and worthwhile exercise both personally and professionally to study this very intriguing actress, a process that began from Winona’s first moments on screen when I realised, as did the rest of the cinema-going public, that Winona Ryder was, and remains, someone to watch.

Acknowledgements
A book such as this cannot be completed without the help, patience and support of many people.
My love and thanks to my daughter Kim for her support and encouragement during the writing of this book; Hannah MacDonald for her suggestions; Robert Smith and my publisher John Blake for their confidence and commitment; my editors Charlotte Helyar and Sonya Perkins for their patience and understanding; Jon Davies for his creativity in designing the original print version (and Neil Rees for the striking cover of this digital edition); and Adam Parfitt for taking care of the nuts and bolts. Thanks too, to Greg Hatfield and Alison Denham at my American distributors, Seven Hills; and to Paul Andrews and Joe Larkins at my digital distributors, Andrews UK Limited.
Gratitude is most certainly due to Keith Hayward for his invaluable help with research as well as some lively debates on the merits of Winona’s career (although he was wrong, of course, most of the time); to Peter Lewry for generously accessing so much useful material.
Organisations and individuals who helped out along the way were Kate Bradford and David Freed at Twentieth Century-Fox; Chris Warrington at Fox Pathe Home Entertainment; Nigel Flude at Polygram Filmed Entertainment; Charlotte Tudor at Corbett & Keene; Becky Goodrich at CIC; Stephen and Gwen at Video Searchers for turning up some of the early obscure stuff; Cheryl Newman at Premiere magazine; Joe Hipgrave at Index On Censorship for The Crucible UK Premiere material; Claire Thornton for getting me to the Alien Resurrection UK national press show; Matthew Knight at Public Eye Communications; Georgina O’Neil at Entertainment Films; Danielle Soupe at Columbia-Tristar; Hannah Whitlow at Empire magazine; Chris Samson and Eric Reed at the Petaluma Argus Courier; Dr Kim Jamieson for the Petaluma School District; Paul Robinson at BMG for The Crucible soundtrack which became my constant companion during the research and writing of that chapter; Michael Wilson for generously locating an endless supply of cuttings, magazines and pictures; Neil Milner who very kindly sent me issues of his Winona fanzine, did his best to satisfy my demands for obscure information, and even tracked down a workprint copy of Bram Stoker’s Dracula; Scott Coldwell who was equally generous for allowing me to sleuth his Winona collection of magazines, photographs and memorabilia; Stefan Fox and the staff at the Virgin Multiplex in Pevensey for their tireless hospitality every time Winona movies were on; Roy Galloway at Eastbourne’s Curzon Cineplex for the one-day presentation of Edward Scissorhands and his invitation for me to introduce the movie at both showings; everyone who sat through The Crucible and Alien Resurrection with me countless times; and all those friends, colleagues and family who provided support and encouragement in various combinations and whose social circles I had to withdraw from during the writing of this book - no doubt their lives improved immeasurably as a consequence of not having to listen to my Winona-isms!
My very special gratitude is due to the Polly Klaas Foundation, the American Conservatory Theater, and the American Indian College Fund, all of whom confirmed some factual information, any surviving errors are, of course, entirely mine.
I would also like to thank those who maintain the following Internet sites for their often unsung research efforts; Eric Harshbarger’s Authorized Winona Ryder Site (alas no more); the Alt. Fan. Winona Ryder Newsgroup; Winona Ryder Illustrated; Vicki McKay’s A Fan’s Page for Johnny Depp; Shaun Fleming’s Glen Shadix official website; the Internet Movie Database; and Demon Internet services.
