Freida Selena Pinto (born 18 October 1984) is an Indian actress and model. Hailing from a Mangalorean Catholic family, she wanted to become an actress right from a very young age. Prior to making her cinematic debut, she worked as a model, Television presenter and acted in plays while attending college. Pinto continued modelling for four years and enrolled herself in an acting course at the "Barry John's Acting Studio" in Mumbai where she was trained by Barry John.
Pinto rose to prominence playing the role of "Latika" in the 2008 British Indian drama film Slumdog Millionaire, a film that marked her debut. Her performance was well received as she won the "Breakthrough Performance Award" at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. In addition, her work was nominated at various award ceremonies such as British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) and MTV Movie Awards. Since then she has starred in a number of British Indian and Indian American productions, notably You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Immortals and Trishna where she played the titular character.
In 2009 Pinto became romantically involved with Dev Patel, her co-star in Slumdog Millionaire, with whom she is currently living. Her off-screen roles include being a part of the "Agassi Foundation", a philanthropic organisation started by Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf which looks after providing education for deprived children.

[1] Freida Selena Pinto(born 18 October 1984) is an Indian actress and model best known for her portrayal of Latika in the 2008 Academy Award winning filmSlumdog Millionaire, for which she won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. After the success of the film she went on to star in the films such asYou Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger,Miral—in which she played the title character—and the box-office hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Early life [2][3][4][5] Pinto was born into a Mangalorean Catholic family in Mumbai. Her surname is of Portuguese origin as the [6][7] result of her ancestors' conversion to Catholicism by missionaries. Her mother, Sylvia, is the principal of St. John's High School (Goregaon), and her father, Frederick, is a senior branch manager at the Bank of Baroda. Her [8] elder sister, Sharon, is an associate producer for the NDTV news channel. Pinto dreamed of becoming an actress [9] since she was five years old. When Freida was ten, Sushmita Sen won Miss Universe 1994, which turned out to be [2] a defining point in Freida's life. She studied at Carmel of St. Joseph School in Malad, Mumbai and completed a degree in arts with a major in English Literature, and minors in Psychology and Economics, from St. Xavier's [9][10][11] [2] College, Mumbai. She had also acted in plays and amateur theatre while attending St. Xavier's. She later [9] joined Elite Model Management and modelled for two and a half years.

Before starring inSlumdog Millionaire, Pinto anchored the international travel show,Full Circle, on Zee International Asia Pacific in English between 2006–08. Pinto was also featured in several television and print advertisements for products such as Wrigley's Chewing Gum, koda, Vodafone India, Airtel, and DeBeers. Pinto modelled for four years and appeared in runway shows and [8] magazine covers. She learned acting from The Barry John's Acting Studio in [12][13] Andheri and was trained by theatre director Barry John. After six months of auditions, she received a call to audition forSlumdog Millionaire. Pinto auditioned for Danny Boyle and was short-listed and finally selected to star in [10] Slumdog Millionaire.

Pinto made her feature film debut in 2008 inSlumdog Millionaireplaying the role of Latika, the girl with whom Jamal (Dev Patel) is in love. Pinto co-starred in Woody Allen's comedy-drama filmYou Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, with Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Anupam Kher and Naomi Watts, which premiered at the 2010 Cannes Film [24] Festival. Pinto appeared in the 2011 science fiction filmRise of the Planet of the Apes, a reboot of thePlanet of the Apesseries, opposite James Franco. She played Caroline, a primatologist, in the film. Charity work Pinto joined Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf in support of their philanthropic organisation "Agassi Foundation". She is the only Indian actress to have participated in their annual fund raiser titled, "The 15th Grand Slam for Children", [27] that aims at raising funds for education of underprivileged children.

Personal life [28] Pinto was engaged to her former publicist Rohan Antao, before ending that relationship in January 2009. She has been in a relationship withSlumdog Millionaireco-star Dev Patel since 2009 with whom she lives in Los [29] Angeles.
