Biography
19862010: Early life and career beginnings
Ester Dean was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma on April 15, [2] 1986, but lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma, then in her late teens, she moved to Omaha, Nebraska. After graduating from Omaha North [3] High School in 2001, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia, until relocating to Los Angeles, California. In an interview Dean spoke on her family life,
Oh, my whole family can sing. When I was growing up, I said I was going to be a chef. And my cousin was like,No you aren't. You're going to sing. And Tulsa, Oklahoma where Dean grew up. I'm like,No, I'm not. I'm going to be a chef. And that's it.And they're like,No, you're going to sing. And I said,Okay, well I'll sing and get the money and set-up a restaurant. My mom, she used to do gospel plays. And we used to go on the road with her and perform in the choir, so I grew up watching her star in these gospel plays. And it just showed, like, Oh my God, I want to do this or do something like this.I noticed how I started to get jealous when they used to pick other little girls to sing certain parts. And I'd be like,Well, I can sing that better.Or
we'd be in their studio and I'm like,I want to sing in a studio. When I was really young, that childhood jealousy and seeing what I really wantedI used to sing into anything I could hear myself back on.

That's what I'd do. Even if it was karaoke, I just wanted to be heard, you know? I believe my mom wanted me to be a star and an artist. I think it trickles down. Sometimes it takes them to want it for you [4][5] to do it. When Dean relocated to Los Angeles, California, she became a successful songwriter, and was introduced to Polow da Don, and later signed to Zone 4 Records/Interscope Records. During her tenure, Dean has amassed a catalog of songs she has written or co-written for other artists, such as Britney Spears, Rihanna, Christina Aguilera, Priyanka Chopra, Monica, Keri Hilson, Keyshia Cole, Kelly Rowland, Girlicious, Katy Perry, Trey Songz, Kelly Clarkson, Ciara, Usher, Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, Pia Toscano, Ginuwine, Teyana Taylor, 4 Britain Sony Various Artists, Scotty McCreery, Beyonc Knowles, and Mary J. Blige, among others. Dean recorded and released her first single, "Drop It Low" which features singer Chris Brown, from the LeBron James documentary,More Than a Game(2009), which peaked at number 38 on the USBillboardHot 100, becoming her first US Top 40 single. The song has gone on to achieve the position of number three on the Hot [7] 100. "Super Bass" is included as part of the title of a UK Deluxe edition of Minaj's album,Pink Friday (Super [8] Bass Edition)has a dual appearance on. Dean Rio: Music From The Motion Picture(2011) with "Let Me Take You To Rio" and "Take You To Rio". Dean is a co-writer and is featured on the song "Invincible", the second single from American rapper Machine Gun Kelly's debut albumLace Up(2012). The song has been used in a HTC ReZound ad and also served as one of several theme songs for WrestleMania XXVIII. Talking on her debut album Dean said, "I did not want to be an artist because I was afraid". Dean confesses, "I had tried that before but I learned I had to lose when I weighed only, it poisoned me, however Polow wanted to embrace [9] everything about me and welcomed me to his family just like me". Dean is working on her debut studio album, which is set to be released in 2013. She told Billboard in 2011, "We're working on picking songs right now," as [10] quoted by The Juice. Dean is shooting for a sound that suits her unique voice, which she calls "hard" and "raspy." In January 2012 Dean took to Twitter to announce that she has signed to Roc Nation "Im so Grateful 4 my Team [11] Past and Present! Bringing in the New Year with my new Team @RocNation 2012", She has worked with [12] Stargate on six of the album's tracks. Dean is one of many musicians in theIce Age: Continental Driftcast. Drake, Nicki Minaj, Queen Latifah and Jennifer Lopez are lending their voices [10] to the film. For her album, Dean has been reported to be working with rapper Nicki Minaj and Roc Nation signed Alexis [15][16] [17] Jordan. There is talk of calling the albumUnderESTAmated. Dean also revealed a possible idea for her album's title saying, "I don't know about [an album title]. It's all about what song you pick. But I would like it to be calledStories Never Told. I've said a lot of things and a lot of people have heard the words I've said, but it's a story never told. They don't understand what I meant by those words [18] because they were always given out through a different source." On October 17, it was reported that the lead single "I Can't Make You Love Me" will appear on her debut album,Story Never Told. On September 26, 2012, Dean revealed that the lead US single would be "How You Love It", featuring Missy Elliott [19] and that it's set for a release. Voice Dean's vocals were described by Billboard.com as "raw, energetic vocals cover a wide range: from club banger to [20] melodic doo-wop/hip-hop." Dean's vocals have also been described as similar to Rihanna and Nicki Minaj. "The songwriters voice is pitched dead center between two artists. The first is frequent collaborator Rihanna, the other is [21] Nicki Minaj when she sings, which is increasingly synonymous withNicki Minaj.
Songwriting style In a 2012 article inThe New Yorker, Dean described her preferred method of songwriting: "I go into the booth and I scream and I sing and I yell, and sometimes it's words but most time [sic] it's not...and I just see when I get this little [22] chill [on her upper arm, below the shoulder] and then I'm, like, 'Yeah, that's the hook.'"

In My City
Writing and production
"In My City" was written by Ester Dean and RedOne. RedOne also produced the track with producer Rush, and worked on the [2][3] instrumentation and programming. American rapper will.i.am played Chopra a demo of "In My City" and advised her to record it. Chopra liked the song and decided to go ahead with the [4][4][5][6] recording.
Brian Kennedy assisted with the production, while Trevor Muzzy, [3] will.i.am and Aubrey "Juice" Delaine engineered the track. The song American rapper will.i.am was the featured artist was recorded at Chalice Recording Studios in Los Angeles, California, on the single. [3] and mixed by Muzzy under RedOne Productions Ltd. Chopra and [5] will.i.am were in the studios for two days while recording; Chopra said she poured her "blood and soul" into it. Gene Grimaldi mastered the track at Oasis Mastering Studios in Burbank, California. "In My City" also features [3] background vocals from Dean, RedOne, Rush and Muzzy. [2] "In My City" talks about resonating with the party culture of urban cities. Chopra said that the song was not inspired by one city, since her father was an army doctor, and her family travelled all over India to cities like [2] [7] Jamshedpur, Lucknow, Delhi, Pune, Bareily, Chandigarh, Mumbai and Ladakh. Chopra told theHindustan Timesthat the song was "about being proud of where I come from. Its inviting the world to my city and my city [8] could be anywhere." The song pays homage to her nomadic childhood and her journey from being a small-town [7] girl to being a successful actor.
Release
"In My City" was released in India 12 hours before its US NFL launch because Chopra wanted her fans in India to hear it before the American release. A press release said that "Priyanka has always been very clear that India would hear her music first. So all plans have been worked out to ensure that. She will be in India for the launch when the song [9] and special video will air during the TV telecast of NFL." The song was showcased in an event on 13 September in Mumbai, which was transmitted live on the YouTube and Bollywood Hungama [10][11] websites.
The release event for "In My City", from left: "In My City" debuted on 13 September 2012, on the NFL Network's Troy Carter, Chopra and Anjula Acharia Bath, [12] sports programme Thursday Night Football . Chopra filmed a video editor of DesiHits website. that aired every Thursday night before and after Thursday Night [12] Football on the NFL Network. The day after the NFL launch, the [13][14][15] song was released on CD single as well as for digital download in India.
Nokia provided exclusive downloads of the song and was chosen as a key feature for Blenders Pride Fashion [9][13] Tour. "In My City" was released to the iTunes Store of the United States on 2 October 2012, for digital [16] downloads. In an interview withThe Economic Times, the singer expressed her nervousness about the single release, describing it as the culmination of a two-year journey which "has been the toughest yet most enriching [13] experience of my life while also marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter."

In My City
Critical reception "In My City" received mixed reviews from critics. Jahnvi Patel from website iDiva gave the song a rating of four out [17] of five. She complemented the song and Chopra's vocals but criticized the computerised introduction. Swagata Panjari from Radio and Music website was surprised by the modulation of Chopra's voice on the track and complimented the "up-beat" nature of the song. She commended the singer for her hard work and vocal training, and said that her "vocal finesse instantly uplifts the single which starts up with perky tune and short introductory titles." Panjari wrote that will.i.am's rapping emphasizes the "uber-cool quotient" of "In My City". However, she criticised [18] Chopra's fake accent on the song, and said that the single "doesnt offer any innovation in terms of music." Suparna Thombare from Bollywoodlife.com, also criticised Chopra's accent on the song, and wrote, "The huskiness and the cool vibe in her voice make 'In My City' exciting. Black Eyed Peas singer will.i.ams rap portions are, as [19] always, super cool." Thombare complimented the dance-pop genre of the song, and said that it "succeeds in making you want to kick off your shoes and dance."Hindustan Timeswriter Robin Bansal was impressed with the song, and called it "[e]clectic, peppy, and electrifying from the startb...bThe song explodes after a point in its massiveness and stays in the head. The impeccable notes and pitch makes one wonder if its really Priyanka.". He [8] added that the song had a high tempo and pitch, making it more like a track by The Black Eyed Peas. Chopra refuted the claims that her voice was digitally modulated, and said she has a high range in her voice, and that she [8] always had an accent while speaking English. Perdy Mohindru fromThe Times of Indiadescribed the lyrics as [20] simple and beautiful, and complemented Chopra's accent and voice. Neha Majumdar fromThe Hinduwas extremely disappointed with the track, calling it musically generic and [21] lyrically filled with platitudes. She gave a negative review of the production, and panned Chopra's auto-tuned vocals. Majumdar wrote that will.I.am's rapping "does little to relieve the monotony; indeed, it manages to increase [21] it, because of how predictable his exhortations are." and that apart fulfilling a desire for "the sort of over-produced music that typically fills up a fast-food chain store", the song is indistinguishable "from the large [21] body of repetitive, unoriginal dance-pop". Writing for the US online news portal GlobalPost, Jason Overdorf did [22] not agree with early reviews that said "In My City" sounded like the music of The Black Eyed Peas.
Commercial performance "In My City" was a commercially successful in India, and reached number-one on the International downloads chart of Nokia Music Store India. The CD single debuted at the top of the pan-India Planet M and Music World retail [23] chain charts. According to theLos Angeles Times, the single broke records by selling more than 130,000 copies [24] [25] within the first week of its release. The single was certified triple platinum by the Indian Music Industry (IMI). In the United States, the single sold 5,000 digital downloads in its first week or release at the iTunes store, according [26] to Nielsen SoundScan. Chopra expressed her amazement at the single's success. She said, "I am so overwhelmed! I can't even begin to explain what I'm feelingb...bit's so amazing that it's been just a few days since launch and my debut single is now No. [23] 1 on the charts. Thank you so much for the support and appreciation. This means the world to me." At the fourth Nokia Music Connect video conference, Chopra said that the commercial numbers for "In My City" were all the [27] more surprising, since the music sales in the Indian market is not that much. Universal Music MD, India, Saarc Devraj Sanyal said that the label was surprised with the instant sales of the song. "We have been in the non film music business for a while and I must admit to mounting engines across all platforms that have been fired like never before on Priyanka's global single debut. But to see these results so quickly is beyond gratifying," Sanyal said, before saying that the single debut would be followed by many promotional campaigns targeting different multimedia [23] facets.
