Sample Book Insights:
#1 The sea was a constant in the life of my family. We were English, and we had our own ways of thinking and living that were very different from those of everyone else in the locality.
#2 I had a difficult childhood, and was constantly thrown together with my brother Dominic. We were not made to feel different especially, we just were. We spent much of our free time alone together.
#3 My father, who had always been a difficult man, became even more driven by his own demons after the move. He told me and my siblings that life has no meaning, and that there is no God. This bleak view of human existence was something I rejected as a child.

Insights from Chapter 2

#1

The consultant informed me that I had an AVM, or an Arteriovenous Malformation, in my brain. It was a complex lesion that was developing its own system of blood vessels. The lesion was large and located in the right-frontal cortex, the motor center for the left-hand side of the body.

#2

I was given a high starting dose of Epilim to calm my brain and help prevent further seizures. I was told that any aggressive medical intervention, such as surgery or chemotherapy, was not a viable option. The best way forward was to find the right cocktail of medication to strike the balance between keeping my brain stable and any side effects minimal.

#3

The hospital staff had been very vague about my condition, saying that the tumor was likely to continue to grow and that surgery was not viable.
