Around the same time, Chris’s sister Jamie got married and moved out. Now studying and working a part-time job, Chris rarely came home. His father, who had once been so close to him, seemed to fall apart.

In 2006, Chris graduated from the NASCAR Institute with honors. He found a full-time job at Mooresville Ford dealership as a service technician, making good money. But the twenty-year-old still dreamed of a career in NASCAR, sending off a stream of job applications. He only got one interview, which went nowhere.

Shanann Cathryn Rzucek was named after the popular sixties rock-and-roll doo-wop group Sha Na Na. She was born on January 10, 1984, in Passaic, New Jersey. She was a sickly child who constantly needed medical attention. She was insecure and often bullied at school.

Around 1999, the Rzucek family moved to Aberdeen, North Carolina, where job prospects were better. Shanann began her freshman year at Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines, and soon met Matt Francis’s theater class.

Shanann began working with the theater group in her sophomore year, becoming a key part of the team. She also began dating Matt Francis, who became her confidant.

Shanann married young and was very ambitious. She began college while her husband joined the army, but soon dropped out to take care of him. They divorced and she moved to Charlotte, where she enrolled in a psychology course.

In 2009, Shanann bought a house in Charlotte, which she later sold for a substantial profit after the murders. She was very wealthy.

After moving to Colorado, Shanann became ill. She was diagnosed with lupus, an incurable autoimmune disease. She was prescribed heavy medication that gave her flu-like symptoms.

Shanann and Chris went on their first date in late August, to the EpiCentre theater in Charlotte, where they serve cocktails and gourmet meals during the movie. They had little chemistry, and Chris was too nervous to even eat.

Shanann had started a photography business, and was becoming increasingly dependent on Chris Watts, who was always there to help her with her medication. She seemed to enjoy being dependent on him.

On November 25, 2010, Shanann posted a photograph of her and Chris on Instagram with the caption My baby! They had a cookout, inviting both sets of parents and Chris’s sister, Jamie. It was not a success.

Shanann and Chris celebrated their first Christmas together at her parents’ house in Aberdeen. They posted several photographs on Instagram, including one where they were kissing, and said they were in pain throughout the holidays due to Shanann's lupus flaring up.

In late February 2011, Shanann and Charlie Dietz moved to Broomfield, Colorado, just a few weeks after their daughter, Eva, was born. Over the last few months, Shanann had grown close to the Dietzes and had become part of their family.
