#1

We’ve written about dozens of crimes in our Notorious USA series. We’ve looked at the worst of the worst: husbands who killed their wives, women who killed their boyfriends, and children who died because they became inconvenient to a parent’s lifestyle.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

Central Colorado was settled by hunters, trappers, farmers, and men mining silver and gold and the merchants who did business with them. The area was home to ancient glaciers, mountain ranges, deserts, and even oceans and beaches.

#2

I grew up in Colorado, and while I loved the scenery, I was always worried about mountain lions, bobcats, and bears. I never thought much about the shooting at Columbine High School, or other mass shootings, until they happened near my house.

#3

The Ramseys were a successful family. John Ramsey, JonBenet’s father, founded and presided over a computer services company. In 1996, his company grossed a billion dollars and he was named Entrepreneur of the Year by the Boulder Chamber of Commerce.

#4

The investigation of JonBenet’s murder created tension between Boulder Police, the FBI, and the District Attorney’s Office. The police encouraged the media to focus on the Ramseys, too. Many saw it as a child being sexualized.

#5

The Ramseys were known as the most hated couple in America after the murder. They had hired attorneys soon after the crime, and public sentiment turned against them as they seemed to be doing everything wrong.

#6

The murder of JonBenet Ramsey showed us how tragic a single death can be in a tight-knit community like Boulder. Nothing could have prepared residents of Colorado’s Front Range area for the massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, which was just after 11 a. m. on a warm April day in 1999.

#7

On April 20, 1999, there was a shooting at Columbine High School that left 13 people dead and 21 more injured.
