Sample Book Insights:
#1 There are infinite variations on the motive, means, and excuses for the darkest crime of all: murder. Some are unpremeditated and leave the killer full of remorse, while other homicides sink to the cruelest depths imaginable and the murderers feel absolutely no twinge of conscience.
#2 The 1960s were a time of great change in America, with the love generation giving way to a more sexually curious and open society. Butswingers’ lifestyles were still dangerous, and they ended up in divorce court.
#3 Dark Forest: Deep Danger is about a case I first investigated in the 1970s. In some sense, it remains almost as mystifying today as it was then.
#4 Teresa Gaethe was a concierge at a fine hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana, when she met school counselor Charles Chuck Leonard in 1988. She had a college degree, but she often exaggerated that fact. She had a boyish figure and kept her nails long and lacquered red.

There are infinite variations on the motive, means, and excuses for the darkest crime of all: murder. Some are unpremeditated and leave the killer full of remorse, while other homicides sink to the cruelest depths imaginable and the murderers feel absolutely no twinge of conscience.

Dark Forest: Deep Danger is about a case I first investigated in the 1970s. In some sense, it remains almost as mystifying today as it was then.

#4

Teresa Gaethe was a concierge at a fine hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana, when she met school counselor Charles Chuck Leonard in 1988. She had a college degree, but she often exaggerated that fact. She had a boyish figure and kept her nails long and lacquered red.

#5

Teresa told Chuck that she was lucky to be alive, and that she had survived open-heart surgery when she was a child. She showed him the scars left from her cardiac operations, and he worried about her. He thought she might be protesting too much when she said she had no lingering effects from such drastic surgery at a young age.

#6

Teresa knew that Nick was wealthy because he had shown her many of the properties he owned. She sometimes wondered what her life would have been like if Nick had chosen her instead of his wife, Grace.

#7

When Chuck was at Fort Lewis, he got a brilliant idea: he would start a pie business. His wife, Reisa, taught him how to make them, and he sold out of his locker for a good profit. But his sergeant found out and made him eat all the pies left in his locker.

#8

Teresa was aloof and cold with her in-laws, and she kept them at arm’s length. She was warm and seductive with Chuck and his father, but otherwise distant and cold with everyone else.

#9

Teresa never returned to New Orleans, and she only visited once. She had a son named Taylor, whom she claimed was born out of wedlock. She and Chuck lived together for more than a year before they got married.

#10

Chuck and Teresa’s wedding was a simple city hall-type ceremony with friends as witnesses. They had a reception at their lake house, and Chuck’s neighbors invited his ex-girlfriends and their dates. Teresa was jealous of all of them.

#11

Teresa was very difficult to read. She had a habit of alienating her husband's friends and family, and she would make sarcastic remarks about how nice the day was. She didn’t seem to care about anything, and she was very difficult to get close to.

#12

Teresa was a man’s woman, and she didn’t care much for women. She was attracted to men, but she didn’t trust them. She couldn’t see a way to have the kind of life she wanted without letting down her guard with certain men.

#13

After the birth of their daughter, Morgan, Theresa began trying to bond with her father. She took him to the lake and watched as he paddled around with his daughter. She also took him to fairs, where he showed his daughter off to his colleagues.

#14

The Leonards appeared to be a happy couple, but as the years passed, the bloom was fading fast from their love for each other. Chuck was always willing to do anything to be able to stay with his daughter.

#15

Teresa’s marriage to Chuck had grown worse each year. She had never been happy with him, and it didn’t appear to matter to her what happened to people who got in her way. She wanted so much, and it didn’t seem to matter what happened to others.

#16

In July 1992, Chuck and Michelle were involved in an incident that made the news. They were both arrested for indecent exposure, and Chuck was cited for disorderly conduct. The charges were dropped, but the marriage was over soon after. Teresa had begun an affair with Nick Callas, and she expected to marry him soon.

#17

After filing for divorce, Teresa began seeing Nick more frequently. She had a plan in mind, but the logistics involved were going to be tricky. She was not going to divorce Chuck until she was absolutely sure that she had a safe and luxuriant landing place.

#18

Teresa had built a maze of complicated plans for her and Nick. She had visited her gynecologist on May 10, 1995, and told him that she wanted to know how in vitro fertilization worked. She knew she still produced eggs, and that an old friend in Hawaii would provide sperm.

#19

When Teresa went to see her doctor about having a baby, she was told that she could not have one because of her low sperm count. She then decided to have a surrogate mother carry her baby after in vitro fertilization with Nick’s sperm.

#20

The author found that Teresa was very careful about how she navigated her complicated situation. She loved Morgan, but she needed time for herself as well. She wanted to finalize her divorce from Chuck, move to Hawaii, and have a child with Nick.
