Ann had met a girl named Aminatou in DC two years before she moved there, and Aminatou had always felt like she didn’t fit in. She had always felt drawn to the city because of its architecture, and she had always felt like she would live there as an adult.

Aminatou, having moved to the United States on a student visa, was now working on an H-1B work visa. She was hired at a think tank, but was mostly relegated to sending mail and entering data. She was frustrated that no one had anything substantive for her to do.

We met in our 20s, when we were both looking to establish our own village on the shore. We were lucky that we had both made our way to the same city, within a few years of each other.
