PRELUDE
This is a true story, a story of how medicine began in the far western part of Broward county. And of course, some of my own story because I was so intimately involved in the evolution of the development of medicine in that area. It mainly covers the period in west Broward from 1967 to 1988. There are also some chapters detailing the events leading up to and following these years.
But since I’m writing this tale in 2023 without notes, I’m sure a lot of both funny and sad stories are missing that would have been included had I known I was going to undertake this venture. Some of the photos are mine, some are from the internet, unfortunately some have been lost.
But I thought this story might be of some interest, especially to those of you who were there.
I hope so.

When I grow up, I want to be a radiolo gist

“Go West, Young Man, Go West”. Everyone has heard this
expression first used by John Babsone Lane Soule in the Terre Haute Express in 1851. It appealed to Horace Greeley, who rephrased it slightly in an editorial in the New York Tribune on July 13, 1865 as
“Go West, young man, and grow up with the country.”
Well, I did. And this book is my story. Was I lucky? Maybe. Was it out of desperation? Partly, for sure. Certainly I was in the right place at the right time. But in any case, I was one of the pioneers in the field of what became joint ventures, physician owned centers, self referral and all the subsequent legislation.
But I like to think I started medicine in the boondocks of ‘west’ west Broward. But west Broward now has become almost central Broward, from dirt roads to busy four-lane highways, from cow pastures to large shopping malls and huge population growth. Land that sold for $40,000 for twenty acres now sells for that price per foot of frontage property. Back when I was in medical school, had I been smart (and had some money), I probably should have bought all of south Florida.
If I hadn’t started the first two hospitals out west in the middle of nowhere, sure, certainly someone else would have. There was nowhere else to go except west. I’ve included a few photos to try to give you a feel of what west Broward was like years ago, as well as a few personal photos.
And this is the story of how I as a young radiologist followed Horace Greeley’s advice. I grew up with the county and it grew up with me.
