The Basics Nicole was born on the 21 st of September 1981. Her name at birth was in fact Nicole Camille Escovedo. Nicole is of Spanish, Creole and Afro-Mexican ancestry. Nicole’s biological father is a musician named Peter Michael Escovedo. Her biological mother is called Karen; she was an executive assistant for singer Sheila E, who is in fact Nicole’s aunt! When Nicole was just three years old, her biological mother and father reached an incredibly tough decision: they could no longer afford to care for their daughter. Because of this, Lionel Richie (a singer and close friend of Peter’s) and his then-wife Brenda agreed for Nicole to move in with them. At first, Lionel became Nicole’s legal guardian. When she was nine, Lionel and Brenda decided to officially adopt her.
