“D amn, bruh. You’re a sight for sore eyes. This shit up in here have a nigga stressed, but it’s good to see my people.” Hawk looked me over and then smiled.
He still looked the same, and I had no idea why I expected any different, but I hadn’t seen him since he’d been locked up.
That was almost a year ago.
“I see your ass is eating good.”
Hawk had put on a few pounds. He had always been a big muthafucker, but I guess with all the time he had in there, he was bulking up.
“Fuck you, Fray. I don’t have shit else to do but push weight.” He chuckled. “Not the kind I’m used to pushing, but it keeps my mind at ease.
Yeah right, the only thing you’ve ever done is collected money off the work that we put in for you. Fraud ass.
“I hear you,” was all I said. No need to state the obvious.
“You seem straight, with all that expensive ass shit you got on. Money must be right. You’re running my shit like I taught you, I see.”
See, this that shit that annoyed the fuck outta me. He didn’t teach me shit. The streets did, and hell yeah, I was running shit, and better than he ever could.
I sat down on the gray bench that was attached to the table we had been assigned to in the visitation room before I looked around at the people visiting friends and loved ones. This shit was sad as fuck, and I never wanted to end up here. Focusing on Hawk again, I nodded.
“Yeah, shits running smooth. We’re making money, as always. You need anything?”
“Nah, I’m straight. You know my lil honeys keep me on point. You actually just missed Red.” He smirked and bit down on his lip.
Red? The fuck she doing up here? She hasn’t even been in the streets because of the baby she just had, so there’s no need for her to be communicating with Hawk.
“Damn, she supporting you like that?”
“Hell yeah, she is. She wouldn’t have a got damn thing if it wasn’t for me.”
Hawk’s expression turned cold, and I nodded. Red was a chick he ran with until he finally put her on. She was on our team pushing weight and everything but stayed up under Hawk’s ass when he was in the streets. If it hadn’t been for her, he’d be doing ten years instead of the five he got.
The night he got busted, she managed to hide all the coke he had in his car on her body and purse when the cops stopped him. Had it not been for the illegal firearms, he wouldn’t be there at all, but he had a gun on him and two others in the car. Since Hawk had a record, they took his ass in. It was parole violation number three, so they gave him five years, no questions asked.
Thanks to Red, he wasn’t doing time for sale and distribution.
“She saved your ass a few times too,” I tossed out there, and he nodded.
“You’re right, but she owes me that shit. Hell, I’m damn near supporting her and her entire fucking family. I don’t mind, though. Red’s good people, but that ain't why you’re here. I need to holla at you about something.
“Aight, what’s up?”
“It’s about Charlie.”
I had no idea why he needed to holla at me about her. Charlie was Hawk’s pride and joy. She was younger than him. She and I were the same age at 24, which I knew because we graduated high school together. Hawk was eleven years older than both of us, but he loved her and she loved him, from what I knew.
They had put in five years already, and I didn’t see that changing, even with him doing hard time. Charlie was nineteen when they met. It was some hood romance shit. She had a hard life, mom died, dad was struggling to raise her, and Hawk stepped in and fixed all that.
He gave her the world, sent her to college, and even got her dad out the hood and bought that nigga a big ass house out in Alpharetta. Typical hood love shit, but Hawk was in love with Charlie, and from what everyone knew, she loved his ass right back.
Even now, with him locked up, she wasn’t fucking around with anyone else. Well, not that anyone could tell. If she was, she was damn good at keeping that shit on the low. I wasn’t sure if she knew that Hawk had bitches all across Atlanta like he did or the fact that they were still coming to see him even while he was locked up.
As far as I knew, Charlie was still his girl. She was the type that you would wife without question, which was why I had my eye on her. From a distance, of course, but it didn't stop me from looking. She was fine as fuck, and I had a little thing for her back in high school, but a nigga was on a come up and women weren’t in the picture.
You didn’t step to someone like Charlie unless you wanted to put in time, so regardless of what I had for her back then, I knew better than to take it there.
Now that I had a little something, she was Hawk’s girl, and I wasn’t that type of nigga. Now, if he let her go, I’d be willing to see what she was about. But, right now, I needed my current situation to work for a little while longer while I was building my side hustle. Getting into it with Hawk over pussy wasn’t the move. My money was far more important.
I wasn’t trying to have them problems by letting anything get me sidetracked from the goal at hand.
Hawk trusted me to a certain degree. I was running his business while he did his bid. I came up with Black Diamond Crew, and now I was first in charge. I appreciated that, but it didn’t stop me from making my own moves.
The money was good, and my life was fucking perfect, but trust me, it was about to improve even more. So, as infatuated as I was with Charlie, I wasn’t ready to risk it all for any female, not even her. No matter how sweet I imagined that pussy would be.
“What about Charlie?”
“You know Red had a baby a few months back?”
“Yeah, what’s up?”
“It’s mine. So is her daughter.”
Hawk looked at me stressed as fuck before his hand moved down his face and then up over his head.
Damn, how I miss that shit?
I knew he was fucking her, but I damn sure didn’t know her kids were his. But then again, I mind my business. If it’s not about my money, I didn’t put any time into it.
“Charlie doesn’t know, but she’s about to find out.”
“Fuck, how?”
“I’m gon’ tell her.”
I looked at him in confusion. I wasn’t sure why the hell he needed me, or how I fit into this shit.
“It’s gonna break her, Fray. I can’t handle how that’s gonna make her feel, but Red…” He paused. “Shit, she’s been there for a nigga. Like really been there. She’s never once made me choose. She knew all this time my heart belonged to Charlie, yet she still rode with me. She took care of my daughter and never put that shit in the streets. Nobody knows that she’s mine, and I appreciate her keeping that on the low. I can’t keep doing her like that, so I need to do right by her and my seed. You feel me?”
Nodding to agree, I was even more confused. I mean, I get it, but why fuck up a good thing?
“Look, I feel your dilemma, and you’re in a fucked up position. But, what the hell does that have to do with me?”
“I need you to be there for her, for Charlie. When I call to tell her, I want you to be there to make sure she’s good. And even after, I want you to keep an eye on her, you know. Check in and take care of her. I can’t do that shit, so I need somebody that I trust who can. I’m sure after I tell her what’s going on, she won’t talk to me ever again.”
So, you’re about to fuck up her entire world, and you want me to be there to comfort her. Yeah, I can do that. My dick stays ready.
Either his ass was stupid, or he trusted me more than I thought he did.
Hawk looked up at me, genuinely conflicted, and I understood why. He loved Charlie, but he owed Red. I couldn't say what I would have done in that situation, which was the main reason why I wrapped my shit up.
I fucked bitches, and a lot of them, but I wasn’t dropping seed anywhere. I didn’t want kids spread all over the got damn city. When I had a family, I wanted it to be right, with the woman I loved and planned to spend my life with. Fuck all that baby mama shit.
“Aight, I can do that, but she’s not really gonna fuck with me like that. She’s loyal to you, Hawk. Everyone knows that.”
I really didn’t know shit about Charlie, but that much I knew for sure.
“I know, I’m not telling you to fuck her, just take care of her. Make sure she’s good. Hell, when word gets out, niggas are gonna be breaking down doors to try and get with her. There’s only so much that I can do from here. I want her to be happy, but I’m not really ready to let her go either. I don’t know if I can handle knowing that another muthafucker is replacing me in her life, but I have to be fair. I have to give Red what she deserves for rocking with me, but that means
