About the Author

This book is dedicated to God, my Dad, and my husband.
Without Angelo Scozzari,
I could not have dreamed up any story.
To the Reader
N ettle is the big brother of the Kermode bear twins Gloria and Nathan. Nettle, Gloria, Nathan and now with Vincent, the adopted, over grown frog, are all part of the Sco family. At the same time Gloria, Nathan and Vincent are being honored for their bravery in saving their big brother, Nettle is given the opportunity to earn knighthood by performing a task for King Otto.
Asking Vincent to come along, the two travel to a place where they have never been before. The area was known as the Hot Sand Crossing. This crossing bridges Nettle’s reality to a very different one. When they arrive, Vincent and Nettle make what they think are new friends.
After many different surprises along the way, Nettle obtains what King Otto wants. The return trip home is full of unknown paths, dangers, and risks. The last obstacle is very terrifying and it seems impossible to overcome.
However, because of this experience, Nettle learns that there is more to his world than what he sees. With Vincent and his true friend at his side, Nettle must face this new reality.
To the Parent and Teachers
T his series, called The Ninth Region , is an action adventure fantasy that takes the reader on suspense-filled adventures! The main characters in the second book in the series, Knighting Nettle, are Nettle, an older black bear cub of the bear family called Sco, and Vincent, who was first introduced in The War with the Ice Lady . Vincent is an over grown frog who was befriended by Nettle’s Kermode twin sister and brother, Gloria and Nathan.
Some of the lessons that are learned during this second fanciful, action packed adventure are who can be trusted and how to tell whom your real friends are. There are new important characters to discover and principles to be learned.
This series is directed at readers interested in action-packed, fun-filled stories that will spark their imaginations. Each book does follow an order in the bigger story, but they also can be read individually on their own merit. The Ninth Region series is also directed at the serious readers who will notice life lessons and learn facts of some animals.
This book is a fantasy, so while it is teaching life lessons, it does take place in a fantasy world with fantasy characters. The Ninth Region series, ( War with the Ice Lady, Knighting Nettle, Let Us Hold Fast, and To Live in Darkness or in Light ), is written to entice children to read, imagine, learn, and have some fun at the same time too!
Another goal of this series, in addition to the enjoyment of a good read, is to spark the interest and imagination of all children regardless of their reading level. As mentioned, it is also to introduce life principles in a fun format.
This series also introduces real animals that live in Canada and Alaska.
This book was not only fun to write but fun to discover the stories as they unfolded.
Author’s Notes
O n my website, http://dscozzari.blogspot.com/ , a map is available for each book so the adventures can be followed on it.
Now speaking at schools and book stores, I am pleased with the interest shown in my writing. The first group to have heard my first book was a second grade class. They asked many great questions when I went to visit them. The second meeting I had with kids in school was with a power point presentation to the classes of fifth graders. Here also, I was amazed at the level of the questions that were asked.
One of my new goals in writing this series is for the series to be have a developing story line that runs parallel to the development of student’s reading abilities.
Biblical references come from the American Standard edition of the Bible.
Information on the different animals in these books can be found on U-Tube and on my Face book page entitled, The Ninth Region Series.

“I truly enjoyed Knighting Nettle, from The Ninth Region series. The dimensions of the characters are brought to light, especially in Vincent. He showed courage and absolute faith. This story is a great example of perseverance and keeping faith during challenging times. I cannot wait to share it with my students!”

Epigraph
“T he only faith that wears well and holds its color in all kinds of weather is that which is woven of conviction.”

Chapter One Victory brings joy!
I t looked to be at a great time for the coming celebration! There were no signs of rain even though it was springtime. The Ice Lady no longer existed and no one has heard a peep from either the Polar Spirit or the Fire Prince. Mom and Dad Sco along with the twins Gloria and Nathan have taken the long journey with Nettle to the capital of the Ninth Region in Paw County. Vincent the frog has come along also. Do you remember him? He is the very large enthusiastic frog that made friends with the twins. He has now become a member of the Sco family. The reason for their trip to the capital is that King Otto will honor Nettle along with the other bears who risked their lives to free the captives of the mean Ice Lady.
Nettle is to be given special recognition for his bravery. The twins Gloria and Nathan, along with Vincent, are also to be recognized because they saved the other rescuers and all of the other prisoners in the dead of winter when all normal bears are hibernating.
The capital was beautiful with hundreds of colorful banners and flags blowing in the breeze. The streets were filled of all kinds of animals selling different things like masks, hats, flags, and noisemakers. King Otto’s ‘castle’ was the only gathering place. It was built in front of the main mountainside where a group of caves interconnected inside the mountain and over looked the capital. It opened into a large very long room. This room had a table long enough for King Otto and Queen Dana to have many dinner quests. It was called the Hall. On the right hand side of the Hall, there was a beautiful waterfall that came down the mountainside. At the bottom of this waterfall was a pond that the villagers used for their drinking water supply. From the pond, a small stream flowed downhill to another pond away from the castle. This second pond is where the cubs played and the bears went to cool off. A large performance stage was built on the other side of the Hall. It was used for all public functions. Just like a porch, a large smooth rock ledge encircled the stage, the Hall, and the first pond. This is where the bears would dance to music or gather for occasions like this one. There were several poles that went up high into the sky where flags of all colors were waving to and fro with the breeze.
The celebration is about to begin and the Sco family are sitting in the front row. King Otto and Queen Dana have now arrived along with the King’s council. They crossed over to the stage area on the left. Everyone is cheering and clapping. After all, the Ice Lady is finally gone because of Gloria. This meant that the three-year long war has finally come to an end! One of the many bears on the stage blows on a long silver horn. This is the signal to everyone to quiet down so the ceremony can begin and immediately, they become quiet.
Then the king spoke. “I, King Otto, am so proud of the residents in my kingdom. We have strong, great faith in each other. When some of our citizens were in trouble of the most dangerous kind, our young volunteered to go fetch them out of harm’s way.” All of the citizens began to cheer and clap. King Otto continued, “Once more, the two younger bears want to honor first. These two young bears took it upon themselves to change the course of events leading to the end of the Ice Lady and to freeing the captives
