Chapter 1

Cam was on the phone when he walked into Lauren’s studio, but the second he locked eyes with her, he immediately knew that something was up. She was sitting in the center of the floor holding Cree and with a forced smile, began to breathe a little easier. His presence made her feel safe and mildly relieved.
“What’s up La?” Cam asked as he ended his call, made his way over to her and reached for Cree. Cree began babbling and grinning at the sight of her father which made Cam smile briefly until Lauren was on her feet. She let her body latch onto his, with her head resting on his shoulder. Cam kissed her on the forehead before he asked her again, this time with a little more assertiveness.
“What’s going on La, talk to me?” Cam knew Lauren, and he could tell that something was on her mind. It was his job to find out what it was and fix it for her.
“My dad was here.” She stepped back just enough to create a small amount of distance between the two of them before she used her arms to hug her body.
Cam didn’t speak for a second because he needed a minute to choose his words carefully. His eyes fell on Cree, who was now lying against his shoulder, sucking on her tiny, balled up fist.
“What did he want?” Cam asked before he kissed the top of his daughter’s head and then focused on Lauren.
“He didn’t really say, but I think it was more about you than me.” Laruen watched Cam’s handsome face as it tensed up, knowing that her words were about to set something in motion that would likely spiral out of control.
With a clenched jaw, Cameron’s eyes met Lauren’s before he spoke again. It was like he was processing his thoughts before he let them out. He did that when he was trying to stay calm and not just react, especially now since he had Cree in his arms.
“The fuck you mean it was more about me? What did he say La? I get that it’s your dad, but that motherfucker turned his back on you and basically said fuck you, so now is not the time for you to try and protect him. What the fuck did he say?” Cameron spoke calmly, but the undertone behind his words was anything but. Lauren could feel the rage building, even though he was fighting against it.
“He said that you wouldn’t be in my life for much longer after—”
“Get your shit and let’s go,” Cameron said cutting her off. His eyes roamed the studio until he found Cree’s car seat sitting in the corner of the room. With a fast, long stride, he moved towards it, gripped the handle tightly, lifting it off the floor, while Lauren collected the rest of her and Cree’s belongings. Once they were outside the studio, Cameron quickly surveyed their surroundings while shielding Cree and Lauren's body with his so that she could lock up. He stood close behind her while he waited for her to lock the studio door and then the three of them moved to his car.
“Where are we going?” Lauren asked after Cree was secure in the backseat of Cameron’s car. The two of them were in the front, Cameron looking like he was ready to murder the world, while Lauren was stressed and worried about him.
“Home,” was all he said. Cameron kept his eyes on the road as he drove in silence towards their house. His thoughts were on Julius. Why in the hell would Julius be coming after him and using the threat that he wouldn’t be in Lauren’s life for much longer? It didn’t make sense, but one thing Cam knew for sure, the one thing that made perfect sense to him was that he would not hesitate to take Julius’ life for one second, if he actually tried to make good on his threat.
“I’m about to go put her down,” Lauren said as soon as they walked in the house. Cameron hadn’t said a word the entire way home, and even now that they were safely there, he still wasn't talking; well, not to her anyway, because as she made her way down the hall with a sleeping Cree in her arms, she heard him on the phone with Cane.
“Where are you?” Cam asked the second he heard his brother’s voice. He could hear CJ laughing in the back ground, and he could also hear music and people talking, so he assumed they were out somewhere.
“Dave and Buster’s, what’s up?” Cane responded.
Cameron stood in the foyer and watched as Lauren made her way down the hall, and waited until she disappeared into their bedroom, before he stepped into the living room to continue his conversation with Cane.
“We need to talk. I might have a situation,” Cam said calmly.
“Situation? What’s up, you good?” Cane asked as he took a step away from CJ who was standing on a stool, while wildly hurling basketballs at the net of the game he was standing in front of.
“La’s dad showed up to her studio today.”
“Word, they working shit out?” Cane asked while he spoke to his brother, but kept his eyes on CJ.
“Nah, that’s just it. He’s on some bullshit… told her I wouldn’t be in her life much longer, and I need to figure out what the fuck is up with that.”
“Can I play again?” Cam smiled when he heard his son’s voice in the background.
“Use the card, you’re good CJ,” Cane said as he pointed to the front of the game where he left the plastic card that he overloaded with money for CJ to use in the arcade.
“So that nigga threatening you to get at La? Shit, he hasn’t been around so why now, what’s up with that? I know her mom showed up at the hospital, but she hasn’t been around or contacted La since, right?”
“Exactly, so I need to find out what type of bullshit he’s on. She had Cree with her. He was around my fucking daughter Cane. That shit don’t sit well.”
“Aight, we’ll figure it out. I’ll be out here a little while longer with CJ and then I’m heading your way. Just chill until then.”
“My daughter Cane, you know that shit isn’t gonna fly.”
“I feel you bruh, we’ll handle it,” Cane said, but he knew his brother. Cane knew that this was the calm before the storm, he just hoped that Cameron didn’t do anything stupid.
Cameron flinched just a little when he felt Lauren’s arms rope around his waist, but he quickly relaxed as her body molded against his. They stood there silently, before Lauren moved around him until they were facing each other.
“Are you okay?” she asked looking up into his handsome face, his beard shaved low against his peanut butter complexion. She looked into his slanted eyes, which showed the frustration that he was unsuccessfully attempting to hide from her.
“I’m good.” He pulled her even closer into his body and let his chin rest briefly on top of her head, before he moved back, leaning into a kiss.
“Cameron?” Lauren questioned with concern written all over her face.
“I’m good La, leave it alone. Tell me about the studio.” Cameron let his hands slide down to her waist before he turned her body towards the sofa and guided her to it. He sat first pulling her into his lap, after which he locked her in by closing his arms around her body, and then let his chin fall softly on her shoulder.
“I’m nervous,” she said while she leaned deeper into his body. A light hint of his cologne surrounded them causing Lauren to smile.
“Why are you nervous, this is your shit and you already know you have support. Hell, those damn parents have been stalking your ass waiting for you to open.”
“I know, but it’s different when everything falls on me. Before it was just my class, but now it’s my business. If things don’t work, everybody’s going to be looking at me.”
“Don’t sweat that, its gonna work,” Cam said just as his phone started vibrating in his pocket. So he nudged Lauren, who lifted her body just enough to allow him to reach into his pocket to retrieve it, and then
