Chapter One

“Canan, wake up. Canan, can you hear me?” Liz leaned down over Cane holding the spot in his shoulder where she saw blood pouring out of, but he wouldn’t respond.
“Ty, he won’t wake up!” Liz yelled, looking back over her shoulder.
“Yo, I know that fucking car. That was dude that Cane beat the brakes off of in here a few months ago,” Mouse yelled, as he pulled out his phone. Mouse was a foot solider for BCE, and was about to call Mic to let him know that Cane had just been shot.
Chelsey watched from her car, horrified, and wanted to get out and go to Cane, but she was afraid that it was her fault. Was Marley already in town? He told her that he would let her know when he landed, but what if he didn’t and he was behind this?
Chelsey pulled off in a panic. Tears ran down her face as she sped down the street. She prayed that Cane would be okay. She only wanted Avery out of the picture, not Cane dead.
Dre was frantic inside the shop, not wanting to call Cam. Dre knew that Cam was going to lose it knowing that his little brother had been shot outside of his shop, especially since Cam was the reason why Cane was there in the first place. Nevertheless, Dre knew that he had to make the call.
“What’s up Dre, Cane been by there already? I just talked to his ass and he said he was on his way,” Cam said as soon as he answered.
Dre took a deep breath to prepare himself. “Cam, I need to tell you something.”
“The fuck is up with you sounding all sad and shit?” Cam asked jokingly.
Dre massaged his temple as he tried to find the words to tell his best friend that his baby brother had just been shot. “You need to get down here right now, Cam. Cane just got shot.”
“That shit is not funny Dre. Tell Cane I’m gonna fuck him up for playing like that,” Cam said.
“Cameron, get down here, now!” Dre said calm yet firm to let Cam know that he was serious.
“What the fuck happened? Shit, who the fuck shot my brother, Dre? Are you fucking serious?” Cam was pacing and yelling at the same time.
“We don’t know. He was outside the shop. I’m about to go figure this shit out now. The ambulance is on its way so if they get here before you do, I’ll ride with him and let you know what’s up. They’re gonna take him to Emory.
“Fuck man. Don’t let my fucking brother die, Dre. My fucking brother better not die!” Cam yelled through the phone. “I’m on my way.”
Cameron looked around his bedroom not knowing what else to do, and just started throwing shit. He knocked everything off the dresser and punched the mirror going crazy, until he heard CJ’s voice from his doorway.
“Daddy, what's wrong? Why are you mad?” Cameron turned around and saw the fear in his son’s face. CJ stood there dressed in Polo pajama pants and a red Polo t-shirt, his little face housing the confusion of watching his father’s violent outburst.
Cam walked over to CJ and lifted him off his feet, hugging him so tightly that it was likely that CJ couldn't breathe. His heart raced and anger consumed him, but he refused to let his son see that side of him.
“Come on CJ. Unk is hurt and we have to go see him.” Cam walked out of his room into CJ’s room. He stripped CJ out of his pajamas and threw on a Nike warm-up suit and his Jordans. He grabbed CJ’s drawstring bag and tossed in his PSP and a few Legos, before he lifted him off the ground again, but this time heading towards his car.
“Daddy, what happened to Uncle Cane?” CJ asked as Cam buckled him into his car seat.
“He’s just hurt man, but he’ll be fine.”
“Okay,” CJ responded having confidence in his father’s words, as he pulled his PSP out of his bag and began playing.
Cam took a deep breath, got into the driver’s side of his car, and backed out of his driveway en route to his shop. His mind was all over the place. He needed to call Chy and his pops, but Cam wanted more information before he made that call.
His phone started ringing and he looked down and realized it was Mic. Cam turned off his Bluetooth and answered on his phone, so that CJ couldn’t hear the conversation. Even though CJ was only four, he was smart, and Cam didn't want his son to know that his uncle had been shot.
“You on your way?” Mic asked as soon as he heard Cam’s voice.
“Yeah, but I got CJ with me.”
“What about A?”
“She’s at her moms. Somebody can get her when we find out what’s going on.”
“Mouse was there and he noticed the car. Some dude named City. Cane beat his ass in the shop a while back and embarrassed the shit out of him. I’ve got people looking for him now. We're gonna get that muthafucka, Cam. I'm not gonna stop until that nigga’s casket is scheduled to drop.”
“Tell them to get him but don’t do shit without me,” Cam said. He was going to be the one to put a bullet in the muthafucka that shot his brother.
“I got you Cam.”
“I’ve gotta go Mic, Dre is calling me.”
“Yo, I’m in the ambulance with him right now. Just meet us at Emory,” Dre said as soon as Cam answered.
“Aight, I’m on my way there now. How is he?”
“He was hit in the shoulder but he lost a lot of blood. He’s still out, but they said he looks good. Just hurry up.”
“Don’t let my fucking brother die Dre!” Cam yelled in the phone.
“He’s good Cam, just get here.” Cam ended the call and glanced in his rearview mirror, and CJ was focused on his game. He was driving like a madman trying his best to stay calm, but Cam knew that he was still fifteen minutes away from Emory and the whole time, his mind kept obsessing over the fact that Cane got shot because of him. He put him there at his shop today so he felt responsible; it was on him.
When Cam finally arrived at Emory, he pulled into the parking deck and got CJ out the car. Dre had already called to let him know where they were and that they had Cane in the back so he was in the waiting area. As soon as Cam walked in, Dre was right by his side pulling him into a hug, followed by Ty and Liz. They were family and they loved Cane just as much as Cam did.
“What did they say?” Cam asked Dre after they stepped to the side to talk privately. CJ went right to Liz, and was in her lap showing her something on his PSP.
“The bullet went through and it didn’t hit anything major, so he’s good. They think the fall knocked him unconscious, but they said they’ll be out with an update soon.” Dre made eye contact with Cam before he continued. “He’s good Cam. He’s gonna be fine.”
“Fuck. You know this shit is my fault,” Cam said, as he pulled off his Nike hat and let his hand go over his head and then pulled it back on.
“This is not on you Cam. He got shot because the bitch ass muthafucka he fucked up couldn’t take his ass whooping like a man, so he pulled a bitch move.”
“Yeah, but I sent him there. Fuck!”
“Look, I know you’re trying to carry this but it’s not on you. Focus your energy on handling that muthafucka and let the rest go. He’s good Ca
