W hat would I do if the Lord was not a part of my life? I do not know. Every day in one way or another, I am reminded of His presence. He is in my life and I thank Him for all the blessings and lessons He has sent my way.
My deepest appreciation goes to my family and friends for their support throughout the years; to my church family who demonstrates good examples of faith; to the pastors whose sermons have inspired me; and to the numerous authors whose books have motivated me.
I am truly grateful to Maggie Singleton for her insightful comments in editing this revised manuscript. Special thanks to Heidi Bresnahan who edited the initial manuscript…I appreciate her taking the time and the patience with the many follow-up questions that I had. I also wish to thank Kathleen Andersen who read the first draft and offered comments.
To my husband, Lawrence, whose love I will always cherish. I thank you for sharing your perspective on the topic and for your continuous encouragement and support.

Chapter I
S tacey began walking faster and faster, her 2-inch heels beating the pavement in a rhythm as she stepped up the pace. It was December and the air was cold. She was gasping for breath as she finally broke into a run. Her heart was racing as she made it to her building. Pushing the doorman out of the way, she ran up the stairs to her apartment on the first floor, frantically fumbling for her keys as she did so. She unlocked the door, slammed it shut, and headed straight for her bedroom—dropping her keys and purse on the floor and kicking off her shoes on the way. She fell on the bed, face down. Squeezing her eyes tightly, she tried to fight off feelings of panic.
‘What is happening?’ she wondered. She had an overwhelming feeling that someone was following her, trying to harm her. Was it real or a figment of her imagination? No one had accosted her, of course, but she couldn’t shake the strange feeling she had. It was a feeling of dread, the kind you feel in the pit of your stomach when you hear a weird noise in the dead of night that sounds like it might be a burglar. You lie awake until you identify the source…even if it turns out to be harmless. With the light of day your fears disappear, allowing you to scoff at what seemed so scary the night before.
This was the third time Stacey had felt like a man must be stalking her. She had noticed him for the first time three weeks ago while leaving her office late one night. She was in the middle of the second flight of stairs in the subway station when she became aware of someone watching her from behind. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a red scarf—the same scarf she had seen on the street level at the subway entrance. She figured it was just a fellow passenger, but entered a subway car farther down the platform to play it safe. When she settled in her seat, she peered through the glass of the interlocking door of the next car to see if anyone with a red scarf had gotten on the same train. She was relieved not to notice anyone or anything out of the ordinary. When the train arrived at her stop, she quickly stepped out and headed up the stairs to the street level. There were quite a few people around, even though it was late, so she felt safe.
But when she reached the first corner and turned onto Kingston Avenue, she glanced back and saw the red scarf. She could not believe it. ‘Stop being silly,’ she told herself. ‘It’s just someone who works in the city, takes the same train, and gets off at the same stop as you; lots of people do.’ She walked into a grocery store and made her way to the back and over to the second aisle so that she could get a good view through the window of the passersby. A man wearing a black coat with the collar turned up, tied with a red scarf, a hat and dark glasses passed the store. ‘Dark glasses at this time of night? Odd!’ she muttered to herself. After waiting five minutes she walked out of the store. As she crossed Union Street, she noticed the same man standing by a car on the opposite side of the street looking at her. At that point, she began walking quickly—all the while telling herself that it was just a coincidence. She broke into a run when she turned the corner to her apartment and did not look back.
The second time she noticed him was near work one day when she had stepped out for lunch. He was looking directly at her as she came out of her building. She quickly averted her eyes to appear as if she did not notice him—walking a few doors down the street to see if he would follow her, but it did not appear that he did.
And now it was happening again. The same man, the same red scarf. She had noticed him when she got off the train. This time with his face averted from hers. She ducked into the same store she went into a few weeks ago. However, this time he did not pass by. After waiting fifteen minutes, she came out and did not see him. She breathed a sigh of relief thinking she may have just been paranoid. She began walking toward home—throwing a glance over her shoulder just in case. A few steps later, she looked back and this time saw him coming in her direction. Seeing the red scarf, she turned the corner and ran straight to her apartment.
Her heart was racing as she recalled what had occurred. ‘You have to remain calm, Stacey,’ she whispered to herself. ‘This is all just a bad case of jitters.’ She did not know why anyone would want to follow her, much less hurt her. She thought about calling the cops, but wondered what she would say to them. ‘Is this for real,’ she wondered, ‘or is it a mere coincidence?’
She got up from the bed and went to the mini-bar in the living room to get a drink. She needed something to calm her nerves. She flicked on the television to look for a comedy show that would help take her mind off what had happened, but she could not concentrate. The phone rang and she took a deep breath before answering with a cheery “hello.” It was her friend Linda, who wanted to know if Stacey was going to Bobby’s Bar that evening. Stacey was glad for the distraction and told her that she would meet the group there. The friends met at the bar most Friday evenings to drink, sing Karaoke, catch up on their lives, and generally have fun.
