“I ’m leaving town for a minute. I’m not sure for how long, so I need you to keep things moving while I’m gone.”
“That’s not even up for debate, but what’s good? Anything specific you need me on?” Prez was instantly on alert, but not from what Dakota was saying, it was more from what he wasn’t saying.
“Not yet, but shit is about to change.” Dakota briefly lifted his eyes to Apollo before he lowered his chin to massage his temple. The mounting frustration was pushing a migraine that he needed to get under control.
“That doesn’t sound good, Kode.”
“It’s not.”
“Who are we at war with?”
“My father.”
Dakota didn’t have to look up to know that Apollo had eyes on him again. Since he’d eased into the back seat of the SUV, Dakota hadn’t said a word. Apollo didn’t bother to question him because it wasn’t necessary. He could feel the darkness even before he laid eyes on Dakota. The clearest indication of problems to come settled in from knowing that Dakota had just visited Lucas. That within itself gave Apollo understanding that something wasn’t right.
“Your father?” Prez questioned for clarity. It didn’t matter what name Dakota offered; if it was a problem for his boy, then it was a problem for him. Family or not.
“Yeah, we’ll talk soon. I have a lot of shit to do before I fly out.”
Dakota was already making a mental list of things that had to be done before he could catch the flight he was planning. The two most immediate on his list of concerns was his daughter and then Aara. The idea of flying them both across the country on such short notice wouldn’t go over well, but it was necessary. It was imperative for Dakota to get away to clear his mind, and he refused to leave behind the two people who allowed him peace. Belle wouldn’t be an issue, but Aara…
“Where are you heading?”
“California. Apollo will be around to help out and to keep an eye on things.”
“Aight, bet. I’m good with or without, but I’ll respect wherever you put him.”
“His focus will mostly be on Dallas, but he’ll be on call for whatever you need.”
Prez paused for a moment to process the weight of what Dakota said. “It’s that bad?”
If Dakota felt the need to have Apollo on Dallas 24/7, then whatever was going on was bigger than him.
“You have no idea, but we’ll talk. Hit me up if you need me.”
“Do what you have to do. I’ll be straight on this end,” was the last exchange between the two before the call ended.
“I knew it would get to this point one day. I’ve been dreading it for a while, but it was inevitable.” Apollo’s words were clear and concise. His mind was heavy, even if he had no idea what had transpired between Dakota and Lucas. Knowing them both, he was well aware that a permanent divide had occurred.
“How much do you know?”
Dakota kept his eyes trained on the window. The buildings and cars seemed like a blur but not because of their speed but simply because his mind was racing and unsettled.
“Not much. Your father was smart enough to keep certain things away from me.”
“You don’t know about him and Tatum?”
This time, Dakota looked forward toward the front of the vehicle and waited. When his eyes met with Apollo’s through the rear-view mirror, he had his answer before it was verbalized.
“No. I would have put an end to it and likely killed them both. He knew better.”
“Belle might be his.” Dakota barely got the words out. It pained him to even consider the idea of Lucas being the one who gave Belle life.
“She’ll never be his, Dakota. You know that better than anyone.”
Dakota nodded with understanding. In theory, Apollo was right. Nothing about the situation would change the fact that Belle was his. “Take me home. I have to get my car, and then you’re going to pick up Belle and Aara. I’ll make sure they’re both ready. Once you have them, meet me at the jet. It’s being fueled now and should be ready for flight in a few hours. There are a few loose ends that have to be tied up before we leave.”
“Dakota…”
“Get whatever you’re thinking out of your head. You’re staying back with Dallas. It’s either you or Prez and his hands will be full keeping things running smoothly on the business side. A lot of shit just changed. I’m good on my own.”
Inhaling and releasing a short breath to prevent any further argument behind Dakota’s decision, Apollo simply nodded and resigned to do whatever he was commissioned to do. Now wasn’t the time for him to voice his opinion on the situation, but he would in due time.
Removing his phone from his pocket, Dakota made the first call. It was to Vivian, who he instructed to pack for his daughter. She had a million and one questions, which he shut down. Knowing how he worked, Vivian eventually got the message and did as he asked, promising to have Belle packed, dressed, and ready to leave within the hour. His next call was to Aara, which had him preparing for a fight.
“I’m dressed, so if you’re calling to bully me, then don’t waste your time,” was how she answered.
The cocky tone and underlying annoyance in her voice had him briefly smiling.
“So, I’m a bully now?”
“Yes, actually you are. And not just now , you’ve been a bully since the day I met you. I just kind of like it. Occasionally .”
Dakota couldn’t help the full blown smile that was now on his face. “Occasionally? Should I guess what those occasions are? I have a pretty good idea, and I bet…”
“Dakota, stop.” Aara cut him off, sensing the direction in which the call was moving. Her core pulsed as her thighs tightened briefly before she opened her legs when she felt soreness from the damage that had been done a few hours ago.
Dakota used the moment to switch gears. “Do you trust me?”
“No, I absolutely do not,” Aara lied as a devilish grin spread across her face.
“Damn, that’s pretty fucked up, even if I don’t believe you.”
“You should believe me because I don’t trust you.”
“Aara, we said no lies.”
“ You, said no lies.”
“I’ll address that later. Right now, I need you to do me a favor.”
“Typical man. Always wanting something for nothing.”
Dakota chuckled and shook his head. “I want something but not for nothing. Name your price, and it’s handled.”
“Just that simple, huh? It must be nice to have the world at your fingertips.”
“What’s nice is having you at my fingertips, but I won’t push. For now, just pack.”
“Pack?”
“Yes, pack for a few days. I’m taking you to California with me.”
“No, you’re not.”
“Aara…”
“What?”
“I can’t do this back and forth with you right now. Just pack, please. Or don’t. I can buy what you need, but you have to go with me.”
“I can’t just jump on a plane and go to California. I have work—”
“Which you can do from anywhere. This is important.”
Aara flexed her jaw as she bit her lip. She couldn’t just drop everything and fly to California, and for what? Was he using her to camouflage something illegal? Who the hell flies five hours with no planning? A man like Dakota Moretti , popped in her head just that fast.
“I uhhh…” She paused, not sure what excuse to use, but she wasn’t flying to California.
“Aara, I don’t have time for this shit. You either trust me, or you don’t. Pack. Apollo will be there to get you soon. I would come myself, but I have a few things to do before we take off. You’ll either be on the jet when I get there, or you won’t.”
Dakota ended the call knowing full well that he was taking a risk, but going back and forth with Aara wasn’t what he needed right now. He was also well aware that Apollo would do whateve
