The Depths
I
It was darker now ... darker than it had been a few moments ago – but not black .
A tremendous weight pushed against him from every side, cancelling itself out and causing him to remain still, his limbs limply yet slowly wading around him .
It put him in mind of a thick bog through which it seemed he was sinking . Like a feather suspended in the air, his body floated, unable to sense gravity’s force, failing to grasp any sense of direction and unveiling only one terrifying realisation . He was descending .
With his neck arched upwards and eyes strained to the side, he could just make out the dim light of the surface fading away and dispersing far above .
A faint stream of crimson rose upwards, seemingly borne from his torso . Blood, perhaps? Yet this thought didn’t trouble him like he knew it should . Instead, the capacity of his conscious mind was filled by something far more threatening; for beyond this splash of red, a vast plain, the darkest of blues, stretched out as far as he could see .
In the moments before this descent began, he vaguely remembered the icy sting of metal in his grip . He remembered swaying, slipping, panicking, all before a sharp burst of pain and the sensation of a quick plummet .
But all of this was hazy and the more he thought on it, the less clear it became . It mattered little now though . Even less so as the sheet of light-blue above him slowly gave way to the wide expanse of dark azure below .
He imagined what it must be like up there with the light, looking down on where he was now . Would anyone even be able to see him?
