CHAPTER ONE

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes of the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of god.”
Ephesians 6:10-17 NIV

The sun was rising over Riverside. If anyone glanced up from their busy morning schedule and noticed the sky, they might have done a double take. For up above the city, the sky was filled with an odd vapor like shape. Just a glance was enough to make some wonder if Vandenberg Air Force Base was once again launching some sort of missile. Those people with a more religious background wondered if perhaps it was the beginning of The End. The pale pink, blue, and orange of the sky was enough to take a painters breath away. The swirling whitish-gray vapor above was changing into shapes that could make a devout catholic close his eyes and pray for mercy.
Out of the cloudy mass there appeared a face. As it swirled with the early morning breeze, it changed from a frightening mask of fury to one of a howling malevolent face that would make any drug addict give up their drug of choice in a heartbeat if they were to heed such a fearful sight. Unfortunately, the people in the streets below did not bother interpreting what this “sign” meant to them personally. It gave the Beast great pleasure knowing that even with such a symbolic warning; they were too obtuse to take any warning from the skies seriously. He had chosen Riverside this time, randomly. As he traveled he could feel the discontent and anger emanating from the citizens below. With glee he noticed the high school below. He knew his easiest victims were the young. They were so sure of their immortality. They took no notice of anything beyond themselves and their own needs. Their selfishness was an open door to his ability to overtake and control them in the blink of an eye. These innocents had no idea how easy it was to manipulate their thoughts and control them for just a few moments, then step out and move onto someone else. He could use them to invite the darkness into their friends. The evil would spread quickly and wreak havoc in these lives. He was ready and there was no one to combat him here. He knew there were some Christians that claimed Riverside as their own, but they were not strong enough to impede his evil plan.
School was beginning within the next hour. The teenagers were busy walking on Wood Road from the beautiful two story homes surrounding the ultra-modern Christa McAuliffe High School located in Eaglecrest. Many were busy texting each other as they walked along the busy road that connected with Van Buren Boulevard, the main thoroughfare joining the 215 freeway to the 91 freeway. This area had gone from rural orange groves to a huge community of beautiful two story family homes within a matter of a few years. The prices of these huge homes were shockingly low compared to those in the cities surrounding Riverside. That attracted many families who couldn’t turn down the opportunity to move into a 4 or more bedroom house for $300,000 compared to a similar home elsewhere for over $600,000.
At first no one noticed the lone figure standing by the flagpole in the front of the school. He wore jeans and a white T-Shirt. On his head he wore an Angel’s baseball cap. He stood with his head bowed and his hands clasped in an apparent display of prayer. Other kids pushed and shoved their way past him into the main gates of the school campus. A few nodded or gestured to their friends with a smirk or an outright laugh. He alone, was the bearer of the Light. He made no comment to anyone as they walked by. Their ridicule fell on deaf ears. He knew he had a huge undertaking in front of him. He alone was to carry the burden of saving these students from the unseen wickedness above them. He knew he couldn’t save them all, but his mission was to go forth and gather up as many as he could for the battle to come. He was cognizant of the inevitable loss of life to come, but if he could only save one of these children, it was worth it. As the bell rang and the last of the teenagers went through the gates, he finished his plea for help from his Heavenly Father and raised his head to look up into the sky. His sky blue eyes narrowed in determination. Then, just as suddenly as he had appeared, he disappeared.
CHAPTER TWO

“Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies. Turn from evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their cry; the face of the LORD is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth. The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. A righteous man may have troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all;”
Psalms 36:13-19 NIV

In a beautiful home not far from the high school, a young girl was staring at her computer screen in complete shock. There, in full color, she saw photos, of someone that looked like her, half naked. In confusion she checked up on the top of the screen to verify that this was her page on the MyBook site. But still, it didn’t make any sense. She hadn’t posted any photos of herself like that. How could anyone have gotten these photos of her without her knowing it? Who could have posted these photos? She leaned in closer to the screen, brushing back a lock of her brown hair, and suddenly recognized the locker room at school. Without her knowing it, someone must have taken photos of her right after her post P.E. shower, but whom? She clicked on the photos and tried to find a way to delete them, but since they were posted by someone else, removing them was not an option.
“My God”, she thought, “What should I do?” Stunned by the photos of her drying off by her locker, she hadn’t noticed the posts written underneath each photo. As her light brown eyes moved around the page, the words came into focus. Kids from her school had posted hateful lies about her. One girl said she would walk naked around the locker room hitting on the other girls. Another accused her of sleeping with the swim team. Tears welled up in her eyes. These were kids she had known for years! Anyone who really knew her would know right away that these were just lies. But if anyone else read it on MyBook, it would ruin her reputation at school and in the community. Why would people she considered as her friends say such awful things about her? She glanced around her bedroom. Surrounded by the familiar yellow walls and white lacquer furniture, she should have felt safe and secure. Atop the yellow and white checkered quilt covering her bed was her cheerleading uniform for today’s home game. McAuliffe High was playing Grove High School.
She looked at the photos she had up around her room of her friends hanging out together during cheer practice and games. Her boyfriend, Adam, was in a few of the photos. He was always so sweet. They just started dating at the beginning of last year. It started off slow, but lately things had been getting a little more serious. He had been pressuring her to have sex with him. The way he was constantly touching and hanging on her made her uncomfortable. She made it clear to him she wanted to wait until she was ready. He hadn’t been very happy about it and kept pressuring her.
Mandy ran her hand through her shoulder length brown hair. Suddenly the room felt suffocating. Someone must hate her very much. It had to be someone she knew who started this very cruel prank and she wondered which one of her friends it could be. She looked more carefully at the photos on the wall. Just last night there had been a party at one of the other cheerleader’s home when the girl’s parents were out of town. Mandy had gone for a few hours to hang out with her friends and be with Adam, but some of the football players had brought a keg in the back of one of their trucks. After a few hours some of the kids had started acting stupid and saying dumb things.
Mandy finally asked Adam to take her home. It wasn’t like she was a prude. She had made the choice a while back to avoid situations where she felt like she had no control over things. Her parents trusted her judgment and she didn’t want to ruin that. Once you break trust with others, her mom always told her, you can never bring it back. Last night, Adam had been drinking some of the beer and was starting to get a little too “touchy-feely” in front of the others. Not that anyone had really noticed. Most of the team had been feeling pretty buzzed, as w
