Lane

I tiptoed in our bedroom, grabbed my camera and started taking random pictures of Kayman as he slept. He had his shirt off, with Kennedy balled up on the center of his chest, while Sasha laid at his side. One arm was around Sasha, while the other was tucked safely around Kennedy so that she was secure. This man… I swear. If that wasn't the most adorable thing in the world to me—wait, no, forget adorable, it was just sexy.
After I was satisfied with the pictures that I wanted, I left the three of them in our room sleeping and decided to use the time to get some work done. I still had some editing to finish on photos that I had just taken for a wedding a few days ago.
Since I had Kennedy, it was rare that our house was quiet, so I decided to take advantage of it. We always had a continuous flow of people coming by to see her and at this very moment, I was enjoying a quiet house.
Once I made it to the living room, I sat down at my desk, but of course my solitude only lasted for a brief second because immediately after I had my computer up and going, my phone started ringing. I almost ignored it, but I knew it was Free and she would have just kept calling until I eventually answered.
“I’m working Free.” I held my phone with my shoulder to free up my hands so that I could locate the files that I was about to preview and edit for my clients.
“You’re always working and I really don’t care. I want to see my niece so I’m coming over.”
“Free no, not right now. And besides, she’s in there asleep with Kay and Sasha.”
“Oh my God, you cannot keep that baby from me,” Free whined. I swear my sister was so damn dramatic it wasn’t even funny.
“Free, chill out. I’m not trying to keep her from you. I was just at your house two days ago with her. Where is King anyway? Aren’t you supposed to be working on a son for him?”
“Don’t make me jump my ass through this phone and slap the stupid out of your mouth. He might be working on a son, but I’m not working on anything.” Free sounded so annoyed that I couldn’t help but laugh.
“It takes two, sweetheart, and you know better than anybody that King gets what he wants. Right now, he wants a son boo.”
“Bye Lane, I’m not doing this with you right now, and I’ll be there later to see Kennedy.”
Free hung up on me, like she had been doing the past few conversations that I mentioned her having another baby. Imani was driving her crazy, so she swore off any more kids, but it was her fault. Between Free and King, Mani was hell on wheels. I loved my niece, but to simply say spoiled would not even touch how far gone Mani was. I didn't care what I had to do, Kennedy was not going to be anything like that. The only issue I had with my plan was convincing Kayman. He was so in love with Kennedy that I could almost guarantee that she was going to be just as bad as Imani, or worse, if he had anything to say about it.
Once I had my files up, I started going through the pictures, trying to figure out which ones I wanted to edit and use. I still couldn’t get over the fact that I actually had my own business. Photography was a lifeline for me. It gave me a sense of peace. The best part of being a photographer was that having Kennedy didn't really change much. I was able to take her with me most of the time, so I didn’t have to miss my baby girl. I couldn't imagine missing out on any part of Kennedy’s life. As much as I loved my daughter, you would have never guessed that I was dead set on not having kids. I'm truly grateful that Kayman was not trying to hear that because now that Kennedy was here, she was my heart. I really couldn't see my life any other way.
“No, we can do that, have you talked to Karter?” I turned towards the hallway when I heard Kayman’s voice. He was moving towards me with Kennedy in his arm like a football while he held his phone with his free hand. My eyes went straight to his chest where he had our names tattooed over his heart, and then to his face. He looked upset but he forced a smile when his eyes met mine.
“I don’t have shit to say to him. I don’t know why you keep trying. He made his choice Ma, and we made ours. And I’m his son. Hell, I was his son back then when he decided to turn his back because we didn’t want to do things his way, so fuck him Ma. I love you and that won’t change, but you really need to stop trying to fix shit that he broke.”
I watched Kay as he spoke to his mother, apparently about his father. She had been pushing really hard for him and Karter to talk to Liam. After he basically disowned Karter and Kayman for choosing the streets over his business, neither of them dealt with him on any type of level. Honestly, I didn’t really blame him.
The relationship with Liam, or lack thereof, complicated things because of their mother and sister, but as far as Karter and Kay were concerned, their father didn’t exist. They both felt so strongly about it, that I really didn't see the situation changing anytime soon. No matter how much their mother pushed for it.
“Ma, I’ll call you back. I have Kennedy right now. Yeah I promise, I love you too.”
Kay ended the call and slid his phone into his front pocket. He gave himself a minute, before he walked over to me, leaned down and kissed the top of my head. His hand caressed lovingly down the side of my neck and then across it, before he walked over to the sofa and sat down. Kay’s touch just did something to me because my body was craving more just that quickly.
“What are you working on?”
I looked across at him, but he was looking down at our daughter, which he did a lot. It was like he couldn’t get enough of her. If I was Kay’s sun, then Kennedy was his moon. For him, the two of us were a necessity to his existence.
“That wedding I did last week.” I turned back to my computer and began going over my pictures again. My first thought was to ask about the conversation with his mother, but I could tell that he was annoyed and it was probably the same as it had been over the past few months. Lately, his mother was persistently pushing for Karter and Kay to have dinner at the house with their father. In her mind, if they could just have one conversation then it would solve the distance between them and she would have her family back.
“You have plans today?” This time when I looked back at Kay, he had his eyes on me. I could feel it before I even turned to face him.
“Not really. I’m going to work on this for a while and Free wanted to come by, why?”
“My mom wants us to bring Kennedy by.”
“To see your dad?” I asked and waited.
“I’m going to see my mom. In fact, the only reason why I even go out there is because of her and Ky. Liam can kiss my ass.”
“Has he tried to talk to you? Maybe he knows he was wrong and is ready to admit that.”
“Fuck him Lane. He had plenty of chances, and at this point I really don’t have any fucks to give.”
Kay spoke with so much aggression that Kennedy jumped a little and began to squirm. He held her closer to his chest and began kissing her little face. I decided to let it go.
“So what time are we going?” I asked.
“I don't know, I need to talk to Karter and see what he has going on.”
“Are they back yet?” We had Sasha because Karter and Mo were flying to New York so that she could meet with her agency. Karter wasn't thrilled about her going back to work, but he also knew that it was who she was. Regardless of his feelings about it, it wasn’t fair to expect her not to.
“Yeah, they got in last night, but it was late so I told them to leave Sasha here.”
“I wonder how it went,” I muttered aloud but more to myself.
“I didn’t ask,” Kay said and then stood up. “I’m about to shower and get dressed. I have a few runs to make. You good with the two of them or you want me to drop Sasha off?”
“She’s fine. I can take her later. Are you going to be a while?”
“Nah, shouldn’t be but I’ll call you.” Kay lifted Kennedy’s swing with one arm and moved it beside my desk. Once he had it set up, he put her in it and started it up. I watched the muscles in his upper body flex with every move he made, before I focused on Kennedy.
My baby girl was the most b
